I just finished, took me about 50 minutes start to finish (15 of it was spent on the ground looking for the Banjo Washwer i dropped).

Anyhow, just wanted thank all the TDR members who helped me with Part numbers, installation instructions, tips, and general support. I even got a ton of emails with scanned copies of the service manual.

Everything went smooth. I ordered the pump from Cummins yesterday at 5:30pm and it arrived today at 10:30AM! via Fed Ex with a big Cummins "Engine down shipment" label.

It included the Pump and the 4 replacement Banjo Washers.

The hardest part was getting my huge hands into that small area. I had to use a step ladder and lean over the master cylinder. If you have skinny arms and small hands, it will be a breeze.

I now have 14psi at Idle and 9 at WOT. I am sure relieved. I am installing the pusher pump this weekend.

Thank you all again, i really appreciate all the help.

Excellent news EM! Glad to hear it.

I ordered a pump for my truck and a friend's this morning and expect to have them sometime after 1030 Friday morning. Not too sure when I'll be able to get to it but should have it done at some point this weekend. Glad I checked it when I did as I am going to AZ at the end of the month. I hope I have as good of results as you have with mine.

May the fuel be with me!

Help me folks - whar are the symptoms of a failed pump - does she quit? I noyiced that you are replacimg them on all years even the 2001's like mine. I just turned 61,000 miles on mine - I don't think I have a problem - or do I?

Lift Pump

My 98. 5 just turned 80k miles. How do I determine if my pump is weak/failing? It runs fine but????

I took it to the dealer several weeks ago for a check of fuel pressure & boost pressure. The service order said "All within specs". BFD, what were the numbers? Still don't know. They did all that for nothing. I guess I got what I paid for.

Have a fuel pressure gauge on order(for 2 weeks) from Geno's. What should the pressure be?

Thanks for the info.

Jack, theoretically, as long as you have positive pressure, it's within specs. A local mechanic (a good one) says if you drop below 5 lbs at WOT you should consider the change. Keep your old one for a spare.

EMD, Did you get the new pump that requires the harness purchased separately? Just curious. Mine didn't come with the washers. Just reused my old ones but did pick up two spares last time I was at Cummins South.

Glad to hear you got it on. My pump didn't come with washers or the harness. I know what you mean about dropping the washer and having to look for it - PITA! I can't get my pressure to drop below 12 psi.

I've been reading the "lift Pump Problems" for the past couple months since I bought my truck and am wondering if anyone really knows what the problem is with these. Things that come to mind:

1. Just plain poor design.

2. Pump to far from the fuel tank causing to much load/stress on the pump. Will an extra boost pump really prolong the life of the lift pump.

3. Could it be a heat related problem since the pump is mounted to the engine?

Has anyone disassembled a bad one to find out what part of it actually failed? (Bad bearings, poor insulation on the windings of the motor, poor crimps or soldier related to the windings, OR ?).

I'm an engineer and am usually fixing problems all day at work. Rather than just replacing a part I try to find out why it failed.

Mine came with the washers, but they were not included with the pump, they were a seperate item on the invoice. It just plugged into the stock connector.

I've got PRESSURE!!!!!!!!

Put my new pump on this afternoon and I've got the pressure. 16 @ idle and 12 @ 2500rpm no load. Driving seemed a little more powerful and the drivers seat is much more comfortable since there's not a pucker being drawn up in it from 4 days of knowing that I have virtually no pressure. I didn't do a pressure test while driving yet but probably will later this weekend. Took me right at an hour but its hot out and I had to talk to my neighbor for a bit and had a phone call so I should be right on track with EMD's time with that being said. To anyone that's done this yet, did you work around the fuel filter or did you move it? I took mine loose to gain easier access to the front side of the fuel pump and I think this made it a little easier. That thing is way down there! Anyway, I feel a lot better now that I have it on. BTW, I picked up one for my truck and a friend's truck. He has a 2K 6sp. The guy at Cummins Southern Plains said it showed 2 different pumps between mine and his but that they crossed to the same one. When I asked him if they went to the same one because it was an improvement or to reduce SKUs he said it was an improvement.

BOMBS AWAY!

me too!

Got my new lift pump in this afternoon. Happy day.

My question: How long did I run with no pressure? I had no symptoms until the last couple days, when it started hard. (And then I didn't know if it was lift pump or something missed when I finally got a set of banjo bolts installed. ) ZERO fuel pressure!!! I could not tell any significant differance in performance - unloaded. How likely is it that I've done serious damage to the pump? I would strongly recommend everyone put in the fuel pressure gauge, as I had no indication that my pump had departed at some unknown point. Ray
