Hey guys,

Just got my Briar Hooper FP test gauge today, slapped it in one 2 plugs on top of my housing:

8-9 at Idle

6. 5-7 crusing

3 psi @ WOT

As I understand it, the pressure should never go below 7-8?

I also heard a rumor that Dodge has a new spec for minimum pressure at idle of 8psi.

I have an appointment to take it in to the stealer on Monday am but they said on the phone that Chrysler would mandate they check the pressure pre and post filter, when I questioned them about it costing me any $ they kind of hesitated and said "it shouldn't".

ANY ADVICE on how to approach the stealer so I don't get ripped off would be much apprecited.

p. s. 71k on my 99 (not sure if it's ever had a new LP installed)

The best advice on how to approach a dealer is DON'T. ;) It won't cost you anything if the lift pump is bad but if they check it and they find it is within spec then you will be paying the bill. #@$%!

this is just me

I lost one wors psi than you show, my truck was less than 1 year old and was still under warrenty, when approched the stealer said drive it down and they would test it and if bad they would ORDER ONE, I was showing 0 psi under a slight load and said I would not jeprodise the vp , I asked if I could come down and pick up a new LP from them and they laughed at me so I said I was done doing business with them.

I got a pump from Cummins and had the truck going ... . only lost a half day of work.

JMO... ... ... ... ... . do it yourself for $150 and be done with it, they simply want to get your truck in there and then you will get stuck with a $$$$

When I got my gauge from Briar I had the same experience, except mine showed no pressure :( . Called the dealer took it in they checked it and 30 minutes later I had a new lift pump. My truck had 40K on it at the time. Read your warranty books. Different years are covered under different warranties. Some are listed as covered under the 5 year 100K engine warranty some under the emission warranty. Know your warranty coverage and get them to confirm, before they touch your truck.

lift pump

Never go to a dealer and ask them to just check

a lift pump pressure because you think it's low.

Tell them it's hard starting and no fuel in canister.

Then they will check and replace if nessasary.

Work for me.

:D hope this help's OL Ratlr. Oo.

The day before I was going to have mine checked , I installed a new fuel filter. Well, it wouldn't even prime a drop into the cannister. I went to Cummins, bought one and installed it in an hour. Of course, Dodge said "we would have replaced that you know. . " But I didn't want the hassle of towing it there and waiting two days including the time for them to order it. Chalk one up to my luck.

I bought a liquid filled 0-30 hydraulic guage, got a 36" thin grease gun hose (new of course) and hooked it up post filter. I also bleed the air out too at the guage fitting. I taped it to the windshield, and took her out today.

I have 16psi idle, with about 14. 5 at 70 mph (2000 rpm). I took it up Newport hill (very long and steep) in 4th gear with WOT. It never went below 12psi even at this load. Normal highway driving never sees below 14 psi. I think I'm OK so far.

Ncostello, How many miles do you have on your truck? I'm looking at my warranty book and under the 5-100 part I don't see fuel pump or lift pump listed.

On page 18 on my warranty book I see a category for "LONG TERM EMMISSION RELATED PARTS" in which fuel pump is listed. The graph on page 1 shows a category for Federal Emmission Warranty - Light Duty Truck (8yr-80k)

Just wondering what category everyone's stealers have been replacing the LP under. I'm paranoid these guys may try to rip me off but I don't want to tear into it myself if it's supposed to be covered under some facet of their warranty.

79008 miles as of tonight...

But I dont know what they were going to replace it under. They never said. See, when I bought the truck, all I got was the owners manual. I have assumed up to this very point that my Cummins Engine has a 5/100,000 mile warranty. When I bought the truck, I called Chrysler and told them I was the new owner and wanted any remaining warranty transfered into my name. They told me when the previous owners warranty began and that I had 5/100 on the engine. I dont have a warranty manual. Guess I am in a real need of exactly what is covered on 1999 models and for how long. I believe I am in need of a injector pump and if I cant get this covered after 80,000 miles... Im in a heap of trouble here cause that is coming up real soon for me. If I understand you correctly, the long term emission warranty will cover the injector pump... or us that the lift pump. I dont see how the lift could be related to emissions. Whereas the injector pump is obviously related to emissions output.

The lift pump would be covered under the 8 year 80K warranty, the injection pump is covered under the 5 year 100K warranty. At least that is what mine reads on my 2000. I also have a 5 year diesel wrap that covers my lift pump for 5 years and 100K miles with a $50 deductable. Just make sure you get this settled before they start work on your truck.

Sounds like the warranty hasn't changed. There's only a few items that the 5/100 covers but the injector pump is one of them. The LP should be covered under the 8/80 portion of our 99's.

If you want I can make a copy of the warranty book and send it to you (it's not that many pages).

OL Rattler is right the best way to get the job done is to also state that you have noticed "low power". That way they have to do a FP pressure test to confirm if it is the lift pump causing the low power. If it fits DC's gudelines for out put they can't charge you for checking the FP. If you go in and say that it has low FP and they check it and it fits DC gudelines for FP they can charge you. Just make sure you tell them that you noticed a low power condition and checked the FP and it seemed low to you but they are the "experts" and it is up to them to figure out what is causing the low power.

Well, took the rig in to my local 5-star stealer this a. m. I used the advice about low power & mileage/tested myself and got the disclaimer that it would cost me $75 if it came back ok or was something not covered under warranty  . So I was not holding my breath for about an hour before they got it in the bay and came to tell me my LP was going bad (Yeah!).

The mechanic wrote down 10lbs at idle which was about 1-1. 5lb different than what I measured with my Briar Hooper gauge. I also noticed that the pressure really doesn't drop nearly as much when you check it when the truck is stationary i. e. I could only get it down to 5. 5-6lbs parked but when driving it would go down to 3lbs at WOT in a jiffy. They must have some way to calculate what the pump will drop to under load because I thought the min spec was 8lbs... .....

Anyway, they said it would all be covered under warranty however, nobody in town had a LP in stock (hard to believe with 3-4 big dealers in town). So by tomorrow I should have my new LP and have a wallet not any lighter :D

Thanks to everyone for the advice! That $35 on the TDR membership sure makes up for itself in a hurry.

Its covered

Its covered use (custmer states no power when towing ) this what they will call on the STAR LINE. This will get you a new pump . Say I think its the lift pump . And no power when towing . LOL Ron in LOUISVILLE KY
