someone may have already thought of this, but how about a lift pump from a 2003 quiet cummins? It looks more like something DC would use, i would almost bet it is by Siemens. They do a lot of fuel pumps for them.

Not really sure what pump.......

Is on the 03's. But I do remember a thread way back when discussing the hammering from the VP-44 and if it effected the LP's. With the common rail injection the pump is not rotating like the VP so it may not have that hammering effect and hence the LP's may last longer anyway.

Just my 2¢ worth,

I think this is a good idea and needs some more investigation. They use the same banjo connectors, and I'm pretty sure the same electrical connection. Some one needs to get one and hook it in the system and measure PSI under a variety of operating conditions. (Assuming if PSI numbers are close to the same flow measurement is then irrelevent. )

I planned on doing this, but I am waiting to find a "free" 03 lift pump of some sort.

My question is, can some one explain to me the type of pumping mechanism inside the 03 lift pump? Gears, vanes, piston and plunger, screw? The little bit of training I have had does not address this, and as we don't have the software to talk to the 03 Dodge we are not seeing them in the shop, as well as the fact most, (except the bombed ones) are still under Dodge warranty.

I will say that I have seen a couple of these lift pumps failed on our ISB"02"w/EGR product, but I don't know the circumstances or exact reason for replacement. I have not seen many of these engines in the shop either, so who knows.

AJohnson Carter is making this pump as well and it is roller vane type of pump.

Not only is it made by Carter, but it is part of the fuel filter now... built right on the side of it. I am not sure you can replace the pump seperatly or not. I also remember reading that the pump is considered "not important" to the life of the injection pump as the injection pump can suck fuel from the tank. I believe DC says as long as it produces a positive pressure it is okay.

I have noticed that Diesel Dynamics is working on a pusher pump for high HP 03's so there must be a issue with FP and HP on the 03. :D
