The stupidly desinged Cummins lift pump is beggining to fail on my truck. I think it has about 80K on it. I call it supid because most diesels use a gear syle lift pump and they pretty much out last the engine by far. Mine is leaking out the bottom of the gaskett where it mounts to the engine. I have one on order from Piers. It is costing about $185+ shipping. I am going on a 1200 mile trip in 9 days and I'm not sure the new pump will get here by then. I hope mine will not fail me on the trip:( I am thinking about making a accumulator to dampen out the pressure spikes that this pump makes. I hope that will make it last longer. It would also make the overflow spring last longer.

Opinons?

I bought a smaller than fist sized pulsation/water hammer dampener recently from my local hardware store, $13, that might work well. It is designed to protect pipes from the rapid closing of washing machine valves. Heavy duty steel/rubber diaphragm unit that would work well for what you're planning, just don't know if the diaphragm is compatible with diesel.

Almost 200k on my stock lift pump. Many seem to spring leaks from the primer button area, 25¢ o-ring fixes it right up.

If yours is leaking from where you say it is I'd be concerned with diesel getting in your oil, better give your dipstick a sniff.

I just changed out my stock unit with 251,000 on it a few weeks ago.

I would be courious to see if someone could eliminate the spikes of a single action piston pump :D

i think rather than playing with that put an accumulator on the return line weeding out the overflow valve and replacing it with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator post accumulator.
