I installed a new fuel filter. I did prefill the filter. When I went to manually prime the fuel. It would not pump fuel. It does pump just a tiny amount. Should I replace the lift pump?

I heard you can fix the manual primer. But with 200 k on the OD. Might as well replace the lift pump.

Jeff,

Yes, I would replace fuel lift pump. Seems you mite of lost a check valve.

But does the truck fire up and run ok. If not replace lift pump, especially with the miles you have on the pump.

Don't replace it quite yet.

If the cam stops in exactly the wrong place with the high point of the lobe pushing on the lift pump actuator lever the manual pump won't work. Just bump your starter to move the cam a little and it should work.

If the manual pump button leaks the 10¢ o-ring behind it can be replaced.

Other than that there are no other repairs that can be done to the pump, time for a new one.

Some of the million mile 12 valves I've read about still have the stock lift pump, mine has over 200k without a problem.

Cummins 3936316 Lift pump ( and get the gaskets too * 2=3031348) $175+/-.

Bill is correct, I've begged Carter to sell me the parts to repair the ck. valves. . no way. They think a market doesn't exist. Well maybe not a a billion repair kits a year. . oh well.

Good luck.

Slightly used pump...

Jeff!

I can bring the one I pulled out of mine recently. It was working fine when I pulled it. You could use it for parts or just replace yours.

Yep it fires right up.

I tried maually pumping several times after the engine ran to manually prime it. Not working.

At idle I have about 26 psi. At 2000 rpm I have 37 psi. Its been running these numbers since I've been checking it. Seems good and strong.

I think I fixed the pre heater leak too. I just snugged it up a little tighter. I now have a lot less blue smoke at start up. Runs smoother too.
