Last fall after 143,000 miles the proverbial “Lift Pump” went out.

Our local “*******” quoted $222. 00 for the pump, $10-$13 for the adapter harness and about an hour labor. (D/C has evidently changed the electrical connection)

I then called a local independent auto repair shop that specializes in LT Diesel repair his prices were; $220. 00 for the pump, $10-$13 for the adapter harness and also about an hour labor. Both quotes were very close.

Somewhere in the back of my gray matter I thought that I had read on the TDR site that they weren’t that expensive!

I next went to a local “Big” 18 wheel truck repair shop. Their prices were; $133. 15 for the pump, $6. 84 for the adapter harness and also about an hour labor. I asked, was that a new pump or a rebuilt or a “generic” replacement pump? The service writer’s reply was that it was a brand new Cummins pump in a factory sealed box, which he took off the shelf and showed me. Needless to say $223. 41 dollars (including Tax, Environmental fee and shop supplies) later I went happily on me way. I had thought about installing it myself, however it is winter up here in Idaho and with the difference in the cost of the pump I just considered that I paid “*******” price for the pump by itself and had it installed for “Free”.

The worse part was when I had to tuck my tail in when the service writer said and I quote: His mechanics enjoyed occasionally working on those “Tonka Toy Cummins”. LOL He can call it a Tonka toy all he wants, that’s all right; I am still in love with my 5. 9.

Going to have to check them out for Cummins oil and fuel filter prices when the time comes!

Actually you got a pretty good deal. They are around 140xx from Cummins Rocky Mtn. Adapter was about 7xx and it does take all of about 45 min to change out, so if it was cold and you do not have the energy to do it yourself the price you paid ain't to bad.

Here in Southern Cal (LA area) the prices range from 255-285 bucks, and I havent been able to find a dealer around here that has any in stock!

Its gettin bad I tell ya.

Time to INVEST in the FASS system. :--)

Shortshift, check Fullerton Dodge. I know they had some just a few weeks back. If that doesn't work, PM me, I have connections (and so do you). Prices are goin up on these now. List price I've been told is $270.

This is the FREE enterprise system at its best! If the dealer/private repair shops have the right to charge what they want, then I also have the right to check around for the best price that I am willing to pay!

It pays to shop around!

My local Cummins dealer hooked me up with a new lift pump on Monday at the wholesale price of $124. 06 plus tax. First they quoted me $157. xx and I asked if that was the best price. Then the parts guy gave it to me for $124. 06. I can't say enough good things about my Cummins dealer.

I just bought a lift pump from TDR member Kurt Yardley for about $110. 00. Harness included.

He has a shop in Silver City NM.

Thats great info M Evan. Thanks, Im sure it will help someone reading this.

I ended up ordering a FASS system, so hopefully this issue will be part of the past.

DKevDog: Youre right on the $270 price. Im not sure if I called Fullerton Dodge or not. I ran down the list from the Yahoo yellow pages, made about 10 calls, and they all said they are on backorder. One described it as "National Backorder" (but naaah theres no lift pump issue on our trucks, right?). I think it was Frahm Dodge that was the lowest price at $255, Glen Thomas & Cerritos Dodge quoted $275. Thanks for your offer of assistance, I appreciate it.

Probably should have checked out the local Cummins shops, as posted above.

Will be happier with the FASS though.

What is the harness everyone is talking about? Do you need one to replace the lift pump, and if so what is a cummins part # for it?

Thanks,

Matt

MDale... in 2000 the lift pump was upgraded a little. Previous... the engine harness plugged into the lift pump lead wires and plug (receptacle). Those lead wires coming off the pump itself were prone to corrosion at the base of the pump.

In 2000 a new sealed plug receptacle was attached directly to the lift pump body and the lead wires were eliminated thus making it more durable. However the plug shape changed slightly.

So you need the 6" long (including wires) plug adapter deal to plug a 98. 5 - 99 engine harness into a revised 2000 and up pump.

Your 2001 should be a direct plug in to the new pump. You shouldn't need the adapter harness.

paid 117. 00 at local cummins dealer with harness included. and just a fyi, comes with 1 yr warranty, so if you have prob's, contact your local cummins service dept. they helped me out. . on my third one since purchased truck in oct '03.
