I've been a member since 2002 first post. I need some help.

My truck died today. It quit while I was going down the road. I stopped and tried to re-start it, but it just died. Tried to start again died as soon as I mashed the petal. Acts just like a low fuel issue. Dealer has it now I believe it still under the 7 yr warranty. I'm sure glad this did not happen while I was coming down a 7 percent grade. No brakes and no power steering. Bad news.

Question is if the lift pump is out will that kill or have caused damage to my CP3 and injectors?? As they have been run on low fuel/ lack of lube?

Also will the dealer install the in tank lift pump If my lift pump on the back of the fuel filter is bad?? I was just going to order an Air Dog pump and filter too. Been reading about the issues with the unreliable lift pump and didn't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere. I have not had any starting issues nothing and then the truck just quit on me no warning. I'm concerned that the injectors will have been damaged and on their way out too and then the truck is out of warranty by the time they quit working.

If the in tank lift pump is installed by the dealer will I need a different Air dog pick up tube to address that?? Should I obtain the old parts from the dealer?? I really wanted to get rid of the old unreliable lift pump and go with the Air Dog. Any suggestions.

Thanks for the help. I'll post what the dealer finds.

I don't see what year you are but suspect it is a 03-04. 5 . No you won't hurt the CP3 or injectors and they will install in tank fuel pump. Down the line you can do an aftermarket. The in tank is a bit better. You will need to install a separate "straw" in the fuel tank for the aftermarket pump. Also don't let them charge you a dime for this, It is a "no charge" item.

I cannot believe the myths that the 3gen Pumps get, I know of many that have 200k and over 5 years of life. . the in tank may last somewhat longer but they also fail, and then it much more costly. . In fact we have built dual fuel setup using the Factory Pumps that will equal or excel the most popular setup available. . With half the hassle its all plug and turnkey.

I too had this same problem with my truck just shutting off while driving to work. unfortunately i was warned the week before but thought it was a plugged fuel filter from extremely cold weather. when it quit while driving to work a week later it was down to minus 32 F ( thats below zero) so it was a major inconvenience , not to mention i almost got frostbite waiting for my brother to show up to tow me home. Sure enough the transfer pump was completely dead. At 32 below and no garage it took me 5 hours to replace the pump as i had to go inside and warm up about every five minutes. Fortunately i had bought a spare pump from Genoes garage several month's before this happened.

From what i have read the common rail engines don't get the damage from low fuel pressure like the older versions. mine is doing just fine four months later. And also from what i have read the in fuel tank transfer pumps seem to have a pretty good success rate.

I plan to keep the out of tank pump and have ordered another spare pump just in case as well as a fuel pressure gauge to keep track of a potential problem in the future. When money and time allows i will probably go to a FASS or system like you mention.

by the way I only had 35,000 miles on my truck when the transfer pump failed.

Minnesota Has 5% mandatory Bio-Diesel, Year Round, the EGR,Lift, Or turbo problems that I hear Nationwide are rare around here, the 6. 7 Turbo and PDF issues are not as common here in MN, the rails and Pumps that are sent here for repair come from all over the world from Alaska to Puerto Rico. . allot of the failures are relate to the poor refining and Transportation of the product, The worthless lack of enforcement of filter maintenance at the pump is shocking to say the least... One big problem with the most popular systems and Bio-Diesel is they will fail in the extreme -0 temps. . This winter MN had the coolest Jan in 30 Years those bolt on frame systems fail daily it got to the point when they (owners) call in with the problem we refuse to work or perform service. Some owners refuse to accept the fact that those system will fail in the extreme -0 temps with Bio-Diesel. . Bio-Diesel may cause problems even to the most robust systems. Without some type of heat source to the filter when using Bio-Diesel it will fail, The D-Max system was more problematic. Fords was about equal to Dodge.

Sorry I thought I had my truck info on my signature. I still have not heard from the dealer. Are the dealers still using the in tank replacement to replace the external lift pump? I am glad the CP3 and injectors dont suffer from the potential of being ruined by a faulty lift pump. I wonder if the dealer will let me have the old parts?? In moments like this I sure miss my old 1998 12 valve.

Thanks for the help.

Yep. . You differently want the Tank Module, that way in the future if you upgrade you Don't need the draw tube, which in itself creates the less than 1/4 syndrome. they install the in tank pump, and I have seen trouble wiring and just ziptie the relay to the brake line. .

The dealer diagnosed a bad lift pump and replaced it with an in tank version. I guess I’ll have to find an old fuel module to install my Air Dog system. If I dont want the draw straw. The dealer did a good job on the wiring install. The tech did tell me that in an emergency I could draw fuel through the factory in tank lift pump module with and external pump. Thanks for the replies

I considered my truck "safe" since it had only 37K miles on it. I'd better order the factory style replacement from Geno's to carry in the underseat storage for a spare.

Bill
Bill, I would install a Fass system or the equivalent, before failure. When my 04. 5 LP failed at 40K the tech guessed that I wanted the old in tank module if I wanted to go with a Fass system. But I still have to drop the tank to reinstall it. Thats a lot of trouble or expense, depending on how you go about it. It will save the extra step if you just go with the Fass system or equivalent. :)

Lift Pump problem?

My truck died today. After priming the filter I was able to get it started again. I was able to pull the following codes P0088 fuel rail pressure signal above maximum limit, P0148 high-pressure common rail (HPCR) check sum and P0483 fan speed. This is the second time in 2 weeks this has occurred. The first time i changed the filter (400 miles ago). Only had the fan speed trouble code the first time. Is this the lift pump? The truck only has 44K on it, 04 3500 5. 9 4x4 with automatic.
