Archived Dead Tach, Truck stalls, no codes

I've been having an intermittent hesitation problem with my truck since early june which seems to be getting progressively worse. I think it's time to do something about it. Typically it always gives me problems in the morning when i first start it for a minute or two, and also when I've been driving on the highway for a while. I'll be driving along the highway and it feels like the pedal just goes dead... not completely, but almost. If I downshift, the truck will usually snap back into life for awhile. Sometimes if I'm pulling out into an intersection the truck wont even get out of its own way. So... being its becoming a bit of a hazard, I need some advice. I dont have the means to check the fuel pressure, but ya think I should go and swap the lift pump out? Doesnt look to be a tough swap as long as I can get those fuel lines off. Also... the truck gives no codes aside from some "bank 2 sensor 2 heat control valve" junk. I forget what the code was, but I scanned it when it wasnt displaying any check engine light.

Welcome to the TDR ;) , sorry it had to be this way;

Sounds as thou you lost your lift pump. Which in turn took out the VP44 pump. Dead pedal was the give away. You need to install a Fuel pressure gauge as well. How many miles.

Yes, welcome to the TDR. One of the very most important and reasonably overstressed issues on the TDR is "you have got to be able to see what is going on with your truck" - in other words "you need to get some gauges". For about $500 from Geno's garage and an afternoon of labor, maybe $20 in wiring accessories. These will pay for themselves very quickly, look cool, let you see what the heck is going on w/your truck's systems and hopefully provide you w/an avenue to catch things before they cost big $$$.

Just a thought - Crank position sensor or APPS???

Really dig the 69 Chargers.

Well... got a good deal on a lift pump ($139)... so decided to pop it in. Not to my surprise... it didnt fix it. It did seem to get a little better though (could be in my head however). Now what??!!!Nothing is ever this easy for me!

Was the old pump you took out Dead for sure. Meaning it was pumping no fuel, If so then you ran the VP44 pump dry, :{ and for how long no one knows. But the best bet is you lost it. This is why you need a fuel pressure gauge. By replacing the Lift pump and you notice no difference in the performance it tells us the other pump is dead. Very common

Is the truck still in warranty, if so run it to the dealer and have them replace the VP44 fuel pump. If not search threads here as to where to purchase one. I am also assuming you have not modified your CTD Yet. :D You will in time. But get the gauges first they will tell you a bunch about what is going on under the hood.

Have you check for any codes yet. If so let us know. If you do not know how to check, go to the truck and due this.

Turn key to ON position, then OFF, ON, OFF, then ON but do not start it while doing this and look at the odometer, have a pencil handy and wright down what ever it say. Might be something like P0216. Let us know what it says, and we will help you determine what is going on.

I have about 60k on the truck... . I just did the key on/off thing, which by the way I had no idea about. I got:

P-1693

P-0121

P-0216

Think the VP-44 is still under warranty... I dunno? Should be if its such a common problem with a truck with 60k on it!

The lift pump I took out was still running... . it would alwayas fill the fuel bowl and sounded normal..... so can I keep my fingers crossed that I dont have to replace the vp44. Is there anything simple that can go wrong with them??

P0121 (M) Accelerator Position Sensor (APPS)

Signal Voltage Too Low

APPS voltage input below the minimum acceptable

voltage.

P0216 (M) Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure or possible

wrong or incorrectly installed pump keyway.

You need a new VP-44 Injection Pump, take it into the dealer. Dead pedal is what I had first occur on mine when it went out. An 02 with 60k on it will be covered under warranty. They'll prolly replace the APPS too based on the codes. Thats what they did on mine.

Not positive but you should have a 7 year/ 100,000 mile warranty on the truck. They will cover it, you might have to argue if they try to blame it on you. But just let them know you are a member of the TDR and thousands of Dodge Diesel owners have had this happen already. Your not the first nor will you be the last. Good luck and keep us posted.

Forgot to mention Again  , when you get it back PUT A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE ON IT ;) . So you wont have to replace this new one. If you ever drop below 5psi anytime you are risking the VP44 pump.

It'll be covered under the engine warranty, 5yr/100k. Mine was, but Chrysler screwed up and they shipped the pump to the wrong place, so they had my truck for 2 weeks. But they discounted my bill in the end, so I got a valve adjust, new apps, and new injection pump for $80.

General - You say your LP always moved fuel. You might want to consider reinstalling it and making sure it looks like it's always been there, smear some dirt on it and the nuts etc. Take it to the dealer tell them decrease in power and mpg, and tell them about the codes you found. Act dumb at first and see how they treat you before you mentione TDR. I went to a dealership once and mentioned the TDR and the Service Writer commented "another one of those TDR know it alls". He didn't think I heard him and I just waited to see how they would treat me. They tried to make things difficult. I asked to speak with the Service Manager, when he arrived at the counter I told him the comment his staff made to me "a customer" and asked if this was how all their customers were treated or if I was someone special? The SM told someone else to take care of this my "warranty" issues and pulled the other guy in his office.

Anyway, don't pull the guns out until necessary. Dealers get paid darn well to handle warranty issues - if the book say something takes 3 hours and their Tech does it in 1. 5 they submit 3 and get paid for it. They should replace the LP and VP and APPS no charge! Don't let them put one of those blasted "in tank" pumps in. MHO Keep the LP you bought for a spare - you'll need it at some point down the road.

WEll for now... I'll just leave in the LP. I did stretch the truth a little . I already told them that I had put a new lift pump in it as soon as I noticed the hesitation to prevent vp-44 failure, but it didnt fix it. After alot of bull&$#& calling dealers back nd forth, we found out that it will be covered under warranty. Thank GOD! It's scheduled to go in wed am... hopefully it doesnt take too long, they said they have the pump in stock. How long of a job is it to install? Until then, I'll be driving Mom's trusty old diesel VW passat, which would you believe... . needs an injection pump too! Go figure!

Your motor should have a 100,000 coverage by CUMMINS. It has nothing to do with what you bought though the dealer- at least that is what they told me when I had to replace both of my pumps. Good luck.

Got the VP-44 replaced under warranty by the dealer. I love when I go in there and tell them it needs an injection pump they talk to me like I have no clue what I'm talking about. Oh well... . got replaced only took a few hours and its all nicey nice now. The tech told me he didnt replace the apps though, and it still has the code. Should I bother??
