I have a 2001 Dodge 4x4 with approx 100,000 miles edge chip 4inch exhaust it started missing and spudering and not running with any power than died, we replaced the lift pump with a new Mopar lift pump in the tank, when I try to drive it misses like before when you rev it up it dies, does it need a new injector pump and how do you test it to determine if it needs an injector pump?

Did you check for codes? do this key on,off,on off,on off . do not start engine. leave key on after 3rd. time and read any codes in the odometer window. write down codes any post here. If you get 0216 ,1683,etc injection pump failure. you could check the plug at the injection pump. hope this is of some help.

Besides checking for trouble codes...

Have you changed the fuel filter?

Have you checked the fuel pressure at the inlet to the VP44 injection pump? You can buy a fuel pressure test kit at your favorite auto parts store or on places like eBay.

I ask these questions because it's possible you could have a clogged fuel filter or a fuel line restriction.

Good luck,

most likely when the lift pump is weak and you don't notice it right away you pretty much take out the injection pump, like they have said before, take care of the easy fixes and check for codes.

The codes that came up are PPCU then

P 1693

P 0236

P 0230

P 1689 How do you get the information to be able know what there codes mean? Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Your best source for trouble shooting info is the Dodge Diagnostic Procedures Manual.

That P1693 you can ignore.

Could that P0230 actually be a P0238? If so...

P0238 - MAP SENSOR VOLTAGE TOO HIGH

P0236 - MAP SENSOR TOO HIGH TOO LONG

P1689 - NO COMMUNICATION BETWEEN ECM AND INJECTION PUMP MODULE

P1693 - DTC DETECTED IN PCM

The P0236 could be a sign that the MAP sensor is bad, or it could have been caused by all the missing and sputtering.

That P1689 is a the most troublesome. It generally means the VP44 injection pump's computer has quit communicating with the ECM... unless there's simply a problem with the wiring harness between the two. You might try unplugging and reconnecting both the ECM and VP44 connectors to see if that helps.

Another test might be to clear the trouble codes, try to start and run the engine again to see what codes return. If that P1989 comes back and you've verified you have god fuel pressure, then it's probably time for a new VP44.

Sorry!

ya you can get a fass, air dog (father and son own fass and air dog) or you can get a really cheap pump that will do the same exact thing as the others, glacier diesel

Uh Oh!! Sounds like ECM time to me... . I just went through this exact thing not 3 months ago. If you decide that's what you need, contct the folks on e-bay. 1/2 the price of a "new" one from Mopar and a lifetime warranty. Do a search on here for my previous posts and you can read all about it. Good luck!

Mine was the ECM. Must have been the . 01%, but thats for sure what it was. 1k miles since replacement and not one miss, hesitation, or studder. I did, however, put in an airdog prior to the ECM thinking that's what it was. I was wrong, but at least I have that now too! I left the ECM diagnosis up to some "professionals" with acces to alot better diag. equipment than me. It cost me $300 for the tests but that was alot cheaper than buying any parts to throw on and hoping I got lucky.

Noticed you have an Edge. Might give them a call. My 98. 5 24 valve started acting real strange. Went to Auto Zone the codes were 1693 (telling me to check for other codes) and 1689 ECM and Injection pump not talking. Looked further on here and found a reference to checking with Edge. Did call and talked to Kelly. Disconnected the Edge and all is well so far. Waiting for a call back from Edge as you read this. Like I said it is worth the call. Will I end up putting in a new lift pump, most likely just to be sure. However, the Mag Cloride here in Colorado must have messed with my Edge.
