I have a 1998. 75 Dodge 2500 Diesel. I have heard about lift pump failures and I'm concerned about mine.

I have 65,000 miles and the truck performs well. I do not have a guage to check fuel pump pressure.

If I've made it this far without failure is it possible I got a good one? Oo.

Well...

If you have made it this far, at least your injector pump is good. The VP44 is designed to suck fuel if the lift pump dies. The good injector pumps survive, the bad ones leave you dead in the water.

Mine lift pump died, and I had good power yet. The real differece came at 2200 rpm. With a bad lift pump, she did not zoom off if you floored it, acted doggy and really no power above 2600rpm.

You can get a good fuel pressure test set at many parts stores or tool dealers for about $35. Just screw it into the top of the fuel filter housing for an easy check. The housing has pre-filter and post-filter test plugs.

The more I read about this...

the more I think it is like the 5th gear nut problem. It is not a question of if but "when" each of them is going to fail! That statement might seem a little drastic, but I installed a fuel pressure guage so I would know when my pump went bad, and it did 10,000 mi later. I use the guage to tell me when to change the filter. It (the guage) should pay for itself if fuel filter savings alone over the life of the rig.
