wow... this is a good thread that was resurected. Just in time for me to look at either the Auburn LSD or the Detroit..... I think the detroit locker may win out in my case... pun intended
 
Skibum quit fooling around with the LSD and get a Detroit Locker, same price or cheaper than factory junk and uses standard diff oil, no additives, no air lines and garranteed posi-trac all the time. My 91 Spicer 70 LSD piled up and DC wanted 35% more to fix than replace the whole carrier with DL, filled it with 75-140 synthetic and never looked back (250k). 2001 Spicer 80 does not work properly either and it will at first signs of serious problems be going to the parts bin as well. Had one in a 90 Pete in the rear diff 700k and still going. Detroit Lockers have 2 modes cornering and clicking or torqued and locked. PK
 
Biggest problem with the Powr-Lok is the setup and use of friction material on clutch plates. The material wears off to much if you don't add enough friction modifier. Buy the time you add enough to work right, it's so slippery, it's to loose. The use of clutch packs that have no friction material, steel only, can be set tighter. The following diagrams show how to arrange the dished/coned plates so that the clutch pack can be tighter, but still drivable. This is from a Dana - Spicer service manual.

LSD

When sled puller Chris Sutton toasted his Dana 70 we trotted up to Sacramento and loaded up a Dana 80 to replace it with (moneys no object). We made a pit stop at West Coast Differentials to see Erik there. He taught us a lesson regarding the Dana products and the LSD in them.



From the manufacturer the plates in the clutch pack are not spread out correctly. All the fibers are biased one direction and the steels another. This means the LSD isn't going to work as well as it would with the plates split one for one in the clutch pack. With the plates combined the effective surface area is diminished and it isn't going to hold as well.



A LSD shouldn't be giving up on you like that.
 
i have arb's front and rear and they work great!!!! when she's locked she's locked up!! the problem i've seen with our heavy front ends is that they break thru the snow instead of floating on top. when i chain my beast up all the way around with the air lockers she is going machine.
