I have a 93 1 tone I had a 89 i bought new turned up as far as a 13mm rench and a screwdriver can take it. The 93 is a auto and i dont think it is locking up. I red in several back issues how to manually lock it up with a switch and were to tap into the circut for 2nd generation but nothing for 1st generation. Does any body know were to tap in for my truck.

The 93 model year trucks use a A518/37RH automatic. It does not have a lock converter in it. It has a straight torque converter and the trans has Overdrive.

Welcome to the TDR

which trans.?

Have a friend who has a '91 CTD 2wd. He thinks it has a GM350 turbo. automatic in it. What did they use in those years? jps

Philip, evidently some of the late 93 models were built with the A618 lockup trans. I was unaware of this until several long conversations with rebuild shops that had seen them.

Phillips5, check the wires where they come out of the transimission. If it is a lockup converter type you should have 4 wires. One will have power with the key on, one is the neutral safety switch, the other 1 or 2 will be the converter and OD controls. Both the lockup converter and OD operate by grounding the wires I am referencing. Splice into the wires at a convenient place and run them through a swith that has the other end hooked to a solid ground. This will tell you if the trans components are working correctly.

Welcome and let us know what you find out.

If his is a early model 91. It will not have an intercooler and it will have a 727 3spd auto in it.

If it is a 91. 5 then it will have the intercooler and a A518/37RH in it.

I hadn't heard of this before. I wish I was one of the lucky ones. Mine is a 12/92 build date. I have a A518 in mine. Just my luck.

You, me, and several others I have talked to. In spite of the fact the lockup converter was a POS in the model it has to make a difference in mileage and trans life. The good news is they can be made to work right, just dig a little deeper in the wallet. When trying to decide what year a trans to look for in a lookup the builder I was talking to said the A618 was slated for intro in 1993 but DC had problems and delayed it until almost the end of the production run. I have never seen one be he claimed to have rebuilt OEM trans in that year with lockup converter. I have an A518 also that is on its way out. I have been looking high and low for a 47RH used that is still working but no luck. At this point I would take a used A618 just to have a usable transmission. The other option keeps getting vetoed by the CEOF and I get a lecture about my toy spending. I guess I will just wait till she wants to use it and then maybe something will get done. :D

Well I don't think the 618 in late model 93s was too common. I have a build date of 6/93 and it has a 518 but I would not doubt that there are some out there since the head on my truck is cast for the p-pump.

'91 trans

Thanks Philip! He claims to have the build sheet and says it mentions 350 for the trans. I have not seen the sheet, think the guy is wrong!!! jps

The 350 turbo trans could be put into our truck. You could get a 350 with a 205 case behind it. They make the adapter bell housing from the chevy trans to the Cummins engine. But I do not think a stock turbo 350 would last very long behind the 5. 9 Cummins.

I can just about bet any amount of money that the Dodge build sheet will not list a Chevy trans in his Dodge. Dodge would not pay Chevy for one of their trans and it would not go into one of these trucks by Dodges hands.

Scan the build sheet and let us look it over. :D

lockup followup

Thank all of you for your replys. i went out and checked the build date it is 11-92 . Guess that meams no lockup for me. I will have to save some cash and get a B&D. I am not about to crall under and look because no shop and we had a ice storm so we have 6 inches of mud 2 inches of ice lots of water. Am I right to think that 30 psi boost is about 230 hp. I screwed the load screw in on my 90 and bottomed out the afc screw. I get lots of smoke out the 4 inch stack on take off and every shift ( 5 speed) and 35 psi. I have put in 4 head gaskets untill fall 91 no more after that they said there was a change in the gasket so . The inj pump did not like pumping the extra fuel the front bushing went on that. Why couldn,t they use a bearing. And then the getrag did not like pulling backhoes up the mountains so that caust me a $150 bearing kit from vally truck parts in grand rapids mishign. In case any body needs to know where to get them.

'91 Dodge-350 transmission

Yes,Philip,I agree! A 350 would not be a good choice for the '91 my friend owns. It is a 2wd. I have a freshly overhauled 400 transmission in a '79 Buick that might work but not sure of bolt pattern. Doubt if its same as chevy or '91 Dodge either for that matter. Just trying to save friend some money! We live about 50 miles apart so do not see each other much. Also if I were to help with putting in rebuilt, I'm getting to old to work on these without hoist!!! Which brings up a whole new subject. Have been dreaming of a 2 post hoist for some time now. See on net, two outfits in Texas have them in the $2000 range. Oh a man and his toys!!!!! jps
