Make sure any aftermarket cap you get has the proper venting. Someone reported here that his aftermarket cap held a vacuum till it collasped the tank and the cap was sucked on so tight he couldn't get it off.

I'd stick with the Mopar part to be safe.

I was thinking about getting one of those green caps from Geno's but I like the sound of locking better. Does the one from Dodge for the diesels have the proper venting? I suppose if its a part number for diesel applications it should.

Illflem, that aftermarket cap must have ended up on a 12V because if it were on a 24V and built up that much vacuum, the lift pump would have quit and the VP44 would have melted long before the tank ever collapsed :) .

Such a deal

I got one free when I bought my TDR. The fleet woman gave it to me. Come to think of it, a $37,000 truck and a free locking fuel cap. Life is good.

Cary:cool:

If you get one be sure to make a flap for it or you will have a he!! of a time with the key in cold weather. This is a picture of a 3/16" thick piece of rubber held in with a couple of rivets. It also acts as a rain flap (free standing) when filling.

Thomas, I've only had mine (same P/N as your) for 3 months. The only concern I've had is how long it will hold up?? 50K miles is how many months? Is your fuel cap still locking and unlocking as good now as when you bought it?

1) If the OE plastic fuel tank collapsed because of aftermarket fuel cap selection, I would assume the truck in question was a '98. 5 24v rig with the rollover valve capped off... the same way Dodge left it from the factory. This was a real problem when the first 24v Rams hit the streets. Other more savvy dealers picked up on this and rectified the potential problem by removing the cap during the pre-delivery prep.

2) The locking fuel caps sold through the Dodge dealer look EXACTLY like an aftermarket Stant cap... EXACTLY!

Picked one up today at local dealership - no one has mentioned it, but I was able to carefully detach the stock retaining lanyard, and after drilling the proper sized hole in the new cap, re-attached it like the stocker - looks like it came that way from the factory! :D

Gary you and I have way to much time on our hands :-laf Isn't retirement great :D

I'll tell ya what's REALLY nice... I've worked with mechanic's tools and electrical/electronics stuff pretty much my entire life - I built my own home, have a shop well equipped with all sorts of mechanics tools, welders and woodworking tools - having the tools, and the ability to USE them has proved to be a Godsend in terms of money saved and knowledge gained! I truly feel for the few fellas who don't know one end of a wrench from another - and to whom the simple act of changing their own engine oil is a major accomplishment...

We all have to start somewhere - I'm glad *I* came here for the additional info specific to my Cummins I was looking for - and am equally happy when the occasion comes when *I* can repay that to the others who are coming along behind me.

I've been a hot-rodder/custom freak all my life - as well as an electronics nut - my Dodge is largely a great big toy - I certainly DON'T want to do anything to it to damage it or shorten it's life - but if it DOES fail somehow - either on it's own or because of something I did to it, it won't be the end of the world, life goes on... ;)

I have had two locking caps from MOPAR. I had a dumb out and left one at a pump so I bought the second. It froze up on me once and I didn't think it would come off. I finally got it off and after that I thawed it out and then shot it full of silicone spray. It has worked like new ever since even at below 0 temps. I also useds some of the silicone spray to stop my cruise control cable from freezing (kind of scary!).

I don't want to make it easy for some idiot or prankster to mess with my fuel. I recommend the cap from Dodge.
