Locking lug nuts, no key

Just acquired a rollover Cherokee (for the F. I. engine)... ...

It has real nice mag type wheels that would look good an my boat trailer. .

Anyone know how to remove the locking lugnuts without a key????

Try welding a piece of an old lug nut of proper size with the thread part cut off to the locknut to act as an "adapter" for your 4-way.

Leave it parked in the street in a really bad neighborhood and watch from a block away and wait for gang-banger to try to steal them. Once he get's the lug nuts off, call the cops and replace the keyed lug nuts with standard ones and go home.

There are kits made for doing exactly that. Or if you have it on a trailer, talk to your local tire shop. Most of them have the kits and will remove them pretty cheep. It's easy, you pound the socket on, and take it off with a breaker bar. I did 4 the other day in 10 min.

Drive a piece of pipe over the locking nut and take it off with a pipe wrench. Worked for me. (yes it was on MY truck)... . LOL

you can get an old socket that is just big enough that it has to be driven on with a sledge hammer. Drive it on over the lock nut and back it off with 1/2" drive rathcet or impact.

or just a regular nut welded to the end of the lugnut. . grind the chrome down, hold nut in place, then weld the inside of the nut to the lock lug. . mig is easiest for this task. .

This is the way! A 1" to 1 1/8" will work every time.

all of the above work real well, best tool ive found is my air hammer with a sharp chisel a few light well controled blows and your done.

12 point socket. Drive on and crack loose. Once the nut is loose tap the side of the socket to get it off the nut. I used my Snap-On 12 point, didn't hurt it.

Or you could forgoe the welder, ruining sockets and buy a bolt extractor set(for rounded heads) that will take them off easily and you can reuse the extractor set. Sears even has them.



No reason to go to an extreme and reinvent the wheel. Your not stranded somewhere, buy the right tools.

I've noticed that a lot of lugnuts have thin aluminum fashion condoms (for lack of a better term... OK, I could have said 'covers' but that's no fun. ) over the regular steel. You'd have to hack the covers off before getting out the welder...



My '96 Jeep TJ has that type of lugnut on it...

many of those bolt head extractors only get up to 3/4"/19mm heads. . there may not be room for it too? if there is room, heck yeah use the extractors. .
