They make a pop-in lock which looks & works fine. Cost ~$35.

Steadfast manufactures the Pop-n-Lock and it is sold through a number of sources. The designer of the Pop-n-Lock is Roger Johnsen of R&S Accessories (800-338-3730) and he sells direct direct to the public. The last time I talked to Roger, he was designing a key operated tailgate lock for the Ram similar to the Ford factory lock. He also mentioned he had a spare tire lock and steering collar for the Ram. It would be worth a phone call.

I believe I ordered my tailgate lock through JC Whitney.

J. C. Whitney advertises an electric operated tailgate lock for about 60 bucks , it connects to the power door locks which is great for those with a power door lock , for me it seems like the only way to go unless R&S accessories comes out with a lock similar to the fords ...

I have an electric tailgate lock tied into my power door locks & alarm system. It's called the "Bosslock", and I got it from Trader's Truck Accessories in Whittier, Calif. They advertise in Truckin' magazine.
The lock works great, I've never had a problem with it.

It's a solenoid mounted inside the tailgate.
Actually, I didn't install it in the tailgate, my Dad did it while I was working on tapping into the door lock wiring. I know he removed the tailgate latch Torx head screws on the inside of the tailgate. I really don't remember what all was involved, but I know it wasn't too difficult. It seems to me I tapped into the power doorlock wiring and fed the wires along the frame to the tailgate. There's a hole in the bottom of the tailgate for the 3500 identification lamps. I fed the wire loom up in there. Sorry I don't have any further details, it was in '97 when we installed it. All I know is that it works!
