Excessive vibration

It takes around 6-8 seconds for my truck to start (on an average) and tonight I tried to start it while in town but had to stop for fear of overheating the starter, I got it started after 3 attempts. I have a fairly new lift pump, two new batteries and a new fuel filter. The truck does not smoke while cranking and once started the truck runs good. I did a search on the forums and could not find my symptoms.

I haven't noticed any performance issues other than the starting. The truck still puffs black when I accelerate quick and no smoke if I run the box in stock.

That is a symptom of an injector failing on the return side. The injector sticks open on teh return side so when the pump is trying to build pressure to start that inj. is just letting it flow through and it doesn't build enough pressure.

I agree w/ andres, get a rail pressure gauge. That is what ultimately led me to replace my injectors, and it fixed my truck. I was only seeing 2-4k psi on my gauge when cranking. The truck needs about 5kpsi to start. I ended up doing all 6 because if one was bad I figured all were close to bad at 140k. If you do replace them it's a great idea to put in a 2micron filter and water separator setup.

My Outlook monitor has ICP reading of 1700psi at start then shoots up to 6k+ psi at idle. Spotsylvainia is about 60 miles south of Washington DC.

Your gauge is probably a little slow to read, but 1700 is way too low. If your handy yourself, pull all the lines off the common rail and re-torque the connector tubes. You might just luck out.

Attached is a pic of the fuel rail, are they #3 in the illustration? This is the first Diesel i have had to work on. Thanks in advance.

been down the injector road 4 times now

first time was a 160k should have bought a set of 6 then BUT i bought 3 that were way bad the other 3 were iffy. after that :

did 2

did 1

then no start again DANG

at 220K bought a new set of stainless inj. from T&C best money ive spent on the truck

if ya got 150K+ on your rig then buy a SET and make sure they are NEW and SS

in the long run its not worth washing a cyl if ya have a leaker and there is no good way to define a leaker other than fuel in yer oil by then IMO thats to late

and yeah sounds like you got 1 or more injectors leaking through the return

A1 Cardone Fuel Injector

Are A1 Cardone Fuel Injectors a good replacment? I was quoted a price tonight, 6 for $657. 82 including shipping. (plus 305 for core)

Oh and thanks everyone for the feedback, you folks are awesome.

Everyone have a
Merry Christmas.

Yes, the number three in the photo is the connector tube nut. The proper torque is 37 ft/lb. Take a look at this write up for clarity, but in your case all you have to do is pull the lines, remove anything in the way of the torque wrench and socket, and torque to 37 ft/lb. No need to pull the valve cover or anything else.

More Questions

Its looking more and more like the injector(s). I pulled the rail and tighten the retainer nuts (looked a little wet around the fittings prior to re-torque). I have replaced the fuel filter, the lift pump is working and once the truck starts it runs fine. However I noticed on the last two fuel filters that the filters looked spotted, is this normal?

Cross over tubes

Not to sound stupid can someone tell me what the "Cross over tubes" are and where they are located? I can not find them in my repair manual. Thanks

Another question

Another question or observation, every time I break the injector fuel lines loose and re-torque the fittings then when I hop in the truck to start it, it starts up in a few seconds:confused:, any reason for this? I am almost positive that i have a bad injector just curious why this would happen.

Just went out and the truck fires up without any problems. I drove it to the store earlier today and let it sit for a hour or so and it fired up, let it sit for 3 hours and it fired up. Could it have been the cross-over tubes and not the injector(s)?

Injector Prices

Well I have been searching for a quality stock injector(s) at a reasonable price. So much for the price portion but here is what I found out so far.

BOSTECH injectors are $299. 95 each
Standard Motor injectors are $299. 95
OEM (Direct from Cummins) injectors are $388. 08 each
A1 Cardone is on an average $600:eek: each with a higher core than any injector.

(These are all remanufactured injectors)

The truck hasn't started in a couple of days, my rail cap showed up today so i started with the back injector (I think thats #6) pulled the line and capped it, and the truck fired up. So I put the line back on and the truck fired up, I shut it down and waited a few minutes and it fired back up??? What gives? I know if i drive it I will start this mess all over. Why when I crack a line on the rail and re torque it the thing will fire up on the first try?

Swithrow, Don't attempt to install Remans. half the life with 100 fold the problems, I sent PM with link to You ON 11-18-09 those were NEW Prices NOT Remans (On New Bosch Injectors). PM and I will resend the Link.
