Cummins states not to let your new engine idle too long. How long is it new? How long is a long idle? When I go through a drive through and it's going to be a long wait, should I shut it off or let it keep idling? I feel that turning it on and off isn't good either. I have 3000 miles on it so far. Any info would be great.

I remember reading that you shouldn't let a 24 valve idle more than about 5 minutes... the cooling system works too well, and it will over-cool, possibly allowing some fuel washdown of the cylinders.

Several ways to combat this... install an e brake and turn it on. Or you can install a fast idler... I believe Practical Solutions makes one.

I doubt with the constant movement of a drivethru that you have a problem there. It is more of a problem of a steady idle.

Hope this helps to explain it a bit!

Practical Solutions does make a High Idler. And yes, 5-10 minutes tops for idleing. Especially in cold weather unless you can increase the RPM's, with... ..... I high idler?
