What does the boost guage tell me?

I am experiencing a very noticeable increase in cranking time on my 04 HO(48re). I did a search and found a thread started by CSniesak back in Feb. Anyone have any new thoughts?

My truck is bone stock save for the negative muffler and drop-in aFe.

Here are my symptoms:

-long cranking times(even the wife notices) at any temp(ambient or motor)

-sometimes, takes 3-4 tries to get the truck started

-flipped 85000 miles today

-batteries show 12. 9 volts while not running and 14. 3volts while runnning

-fuel filter only has 5000 miles on it, air filter recently cleaned

-no check engine light

The last symptom brings me to my next question. Can there be codes without a check engine light(sorry for my ignorance)?

I travel extensively with my work and am beginning to worry about being stranded.

Sorry for the wordiness of this. Just wanted to be as clear as I could.

Thanks,

Ian

yes, cycle your key 3 times. i think there is a new tsb out for this. mine hard starts every morning but is fine after warm-up?

Funny my truck just started having this SAME exact problem just a few days ago. But mine would only do it when it was cold (sitting overnight) After truck is warmed up it starts fine.

I did another search and found out how to check for codes.

Mine display said "done. " Is this good? Bad? Neither?

Anyone having this issue at any temp, not just cold? I drove 200 miles today, stopped for a break, and it was hard to start then.

Any input is appreciated.

After a little more research I found a TSB concerning the symptoms my truck has.

Has anyone dealt w/ TSB#14-003-05? Any luck?

Thanks again,

Ian

Well I took my truck to a stealership in McKinney, Tx. Their mechaninc said I had six bad injectors and that they were pretty sure they weren't going to cover them under warranty(85000 miles).

I really missed my 02 dually, so I walked around and found an 02 2500.

It didn't take much thought at that moment. I now own an 02 2500HO 4X4 lwb.

Good luck to the rest of you with your long crank problems.

has anyone looked to see if the pressure releif valve on the rail is stuck open or not working right causing the fuel to just go back to the tank and not to the injectors? just a thought.

Is my issue related?

Hey all,

I don't have a solution, but my truck just recently and suddenly (last week) is now requiring a good 5-10 seconds to crank (especially when cold) where it used to fire right up, (not even one revolution to crank). I've been up-to-date on fuel filters (every 15K change) and use Standyne regularily? Is this the same issue as you guys are having and since my truck is currently at the dealer (for a trans problem), anything I can have the mechanic look at?

Any thoughts appreciated,

Thanks,

Jon

Jon, 15K is a long time between filter changes. Ive had mine clog within 2k with a lousy tank of fuel.

My advice to everyone would be whenever you truck starts running different, change the fuel filter as it can cause a host of symptoms.

Same problem

I started a thread called "Delayed start up" yesterday. Same exact problem with my 04. I just turned my ignition key 3 times and the code read "done" which I suspect means there are no code problems.

This leads me to believe that I have a mechanical problem, most probably related to fuel pressure bleeding off while parked (?).

I will start by changing my fuel filter which is about 4,500 miles old. I will drain the filter housing, add filter, and fill housing with a fuel cleaner - Redline if I can get my hands on it.

Any more help will be greatly appreciated.

I know that everyone seems to dog their Dealer, and while I don't want to be negative, mine really does suck. They took days to diagnose a clutch slave cylinder that I gave them all the information about. They also took days to replace a u-joint (I have had two more go out since and have just replaced them myself). The service manager has a terrible attitude and is obviously there to make money more than make customers happy. He does not understand that I make a living with my truck and will have it parked in the lot with a minor problem for days.

Lets get some more info on this problem.

My 05 with 13k miles started taking longer to start so I took it in and they put in 3 new injectors. They also had a 03 with 80k on it they put 2 injectors in while my truck was there. It took a week on my truck thanks to Star having the dealership running all there test.

I will have the dealer look into the injectors and swap the fuel filter. Hope they find a fix soon since not having my truck for a couple weeks is getting old quick. At least DC is paying the bill so far on my stuff; no out-of-pocket spending yet.

Thanks for the info all as I think we (the TDR) know more than the dealer mechanics these days.
