My 05 had long crank time at times and started ok at times. Took to dealer and they replaced cam sensor, problem fixed.

I have a long start / slow start problem with a 1998. 5 Cummins 24-valve in a Dodge 2500 Quad Cab. Does my issue below sound similar to this discussion thread? Any other suggestions?

Truck:

1998. 5 Ram 2500 Quad Cab 5. 9 Cummins 24v

Symptoms:

Until recently engine has always started instantaneously for 11 years. Now it takes 2 to 10 seconds of cranking to start. During cranking it acts like there is no fuel at all, no sputtering at all, just all of a sudden it starts all at once.

Starting time seems to be inverse to engine temperature, but not always: 2 second starts most often when engine is cooler. 5-7-10 second starts when engine is hotter. Sometimes it will start in 2 seconds when engine is hot, but rarely does this and normally requires longer cranking.

No drivability problems whatsoever, even with a cab-over truck camper loaded and mountain driving, just the slow start / long start problem.

VP44 high pressure pump and engine-mounted lift pump were replaced 3 years ago, then lift pump leaked fuel through the electrical connector and was replaced with the in-tank pump at Dodge a year ago. CAM Sensor was replaced a year ago too.

Already Tried:

New batteries, new air filter, drained fuel out of filter to make sure no water was in the fuel, several full tanks of fuel all in last two weeks.

So far the Dodge dealer has checked the in-tank fuel pump pressure (engine lift pump was replaced 1 year ago with the in-tank pump unit Dodge now installs) I'm waiting for their flow test verification. Dealer is now poking around the computers. Still no diagnosis for the slow start / long start that's taking 2-10 seconds when engine has started instantaneously before. 2 second starts most often when engine is cooler. 5-7-10 second starts most often when engine is hotter.

Thanks

I called the t & c diesel performance and the guy was rude and didnt seem like he cared unless you were going to place a million dollar order!!!!

Let see, You ask for some info right in the middle of a luncheon with a client that You value his time as worthless, I gave you 12 to 14 minutes of his time, than you call back asking for more info and support for something that we never install or sold you. I get the impression that you take your steak to a restaurant and ask them to fry it when you bring your own bake goods and desert.

Labonte when companies give advice on these forums they are doing it at their leisure . When you call them on free advice you are taking up their time. 10 minutes you should be thankful. When you want it for free stay on the forum and wait for a response. We see that you are not a large poster so there is a learning curve involved. T&C has helped a lot of owners on this forum so be careful this can't be removed and for the world to read. I insert my foot into mouth too . I always see how many fingers are pointing back at me. :)

I understand Labonte18s frustration, He paid $1100. 00 for a repair that did not solve the Problem. . The 3gen engine is a new generation of motors; with the J1850 multiplex communications it makes it tuff without the equipment to do correct diagnostics.
