Yes, and I enjoy practicing that art. The myriad of things a computer can monitor are often things the computer causes to fail. For instance, my wife's last car had the AC fail in the middle of the summer. It failed because of the control module, an item that was no longer available.
Certainly computers can fail, no doubt. However it's quite unusual for them to fail and cause other damage. Cars are more powerful, efficient, and reliable with computers. In fact the computer can protect the engine in ways not possible before. I had a friend who's vehicle ran out of oil thanks to shoddy quick lube work, the computer shut down the engine fast enough to prevent further damage. Pre computer that engine would have been a total loss. That is just one example. Of course one EMP and all these computer cars are useless.. so there is that!

Well, to finish this, I've decided to save my money. At a Christmas party I mentioned to a friend that I was looking at getting a newer truck. He asked "What's wrong with yours?" Other than my wife can't drive it comfortably, nothing. Considering the multitudes of problems pre-68rfe and a bunch of reading I decided on 2008 or newer. All the EGR complaints have turned me off to that. I don't have the bug bad enough to get a new one, so I'll just see if I can wear out the one I have. Yesterday I installed a new cushion from Genos on the driver's side. I might get another for the passenger side. I really do appreciate all the input from everyone.

Good call, even entirely new seats would be far cheaper than any newer truck. I'd rather be in a pre-emmisions truck also. I would still be driving my 2005 Duramax 6sp manual if not for a wreckless driver who hit me and totaled that truck. All in all I'm happy with the 2009, but I can't drive it often and it's not able to be a daily driver thanks to the emmisions system. Enjoy your pre emmisions truck... Upgrades to it are far cheaper for sure.
