Looking at a another 1st gen 5spd.. ?'s

Hi , I have found a '92 w350 SRW 5spd truck for sale I'm looking to use this truck instead of my '89... now I don't have any Getrag experience . I know overfill and run synthetic etc. But I want to know what to look at before buying th truck . It is tight as I can grab the drive shaft and try to move and it will not at all. . my '89 moves 1/4" to 1/2 when in park. . with the auto not sure if that is the rears or trans or trans differance there ? I haven't driven it it need brake line so . . it makes no noises in neutral when its running etc. . it has 161 miles on it a new clutch and real seal was done by mopar right before 100k like 92 k or so its a two owner truck farm uses both owners first one pulls a receiver hitch horse trailer with it. engine is stock no gauges etc no a/c etc . What should I check for getrag problems and other areas. I plan to swap a nv4500 some time in the next few years when I save the $ maybe a tax refund willl buy that?. . hehe... I did notice the rear has big ol set of factory overload springs on top of the rear pack. My '89 w350 didn't have them. I may swap my 3:07 gear axles into this truck it should be nice mpg truck then.

any ideas?

If the transmission shifts fairly smooth and there are no unusual noises then it should be fine.

Just don't sell the Getrag short prematurely... . many have lots of miles. Yes overfill, synthetic, don't lug 5th with a load will prevent it from becomming "unhappy".

I'm assuming we'll see it at the seefood fest in Nov??

Thanks Jay, Yup I'm going to the Seafood fest in Nov. I am negotiating $ with the owner now. I hope to have it and get some of the stuff done before Nov. I haven't driven the truck yet just started it. I Hope it has no noises in the trans. I want to know if its 3. 55 or 4. 10 gears too. . I want to try 3. 07s and the 5spd. I have a friend how just did a 4x4 ramcharger to 2wd and cummins 5spd and 3. 07 gears he loves it. I hope to see if he will bring it to the sea food fest in Nov. any how I have to call the owner now and make a $ offer.

i wonder what speedo gear i need with 3. 07s and getrag. . any clue?. . jsut snag the one from my '89 with 3. 07s and 727?

yeah the speedo gear corresponds with the rear end ratio. I took the gear out of my 727 and put it in the getrag, add a reverser and viola.

If you have a decent DC parts dept they have the right gear combo's in their micro fish or computer if they're in the computer age!

The Speedo cable on the old trucks (85 mph mech speedo) only work in one drive direction i. e. if you floor it down the road in reverse you won't see any speed indication. When I put the getrag in and hooked up the speedo it didn't indacate any fwd speed , only reverse. I added a speedo reversing adaptor that solved this problem. I got it off a transfer case from another pickup.

If I remember correctly the gear for our 3. 07's is RED (well an orangey red) and the one that was for the 3. 54's was GREEN. These are plastic gears

Well I got the new truck tonight. I end up being the 3rd owner. The 2nd owner had lots of paperwork for it. It has 3. 55 gears. Im debating on swappping to the 3. 07s or keeping the 3. 55s . If i keep the 3. 55s I can swap in a dana 80 rear. . with 3. 55s when i up the power. what do you guys think?...

I defininatly want to swap the 21 cm housing out . . it is such a slug compared to my '89 witha 18cm housing. . i am looking for a 16cm housing now. . but i may try a 12cm wastegated i have or my 18cm. . any ideas?
