Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Looking at Dodge 95 diesel Motorhome?

I found a dodge cummings class C motorhome by Scotty for sale. It had a automatic trans and he says Is loaded with opts. Has 32,000 miles and garage kept and one owner. Now I have had two dodge diesel a 99 24 valve and a 2004 one ton dually. Around here truck campers are hard to find and I won't pay the price for a new one. I can buy this class C for what a slide In camper cost. What should I do? Is the 95 cummings a good engine and will the trans hold up?

The '95 would be the 12 valve engine, and with the automatic either 160 horsepower to 175 or 180 max, I'm not sure. If the engine is still stock (no injector pump tinkering) the transmission should be in good shape. Check the color of the transmission fluid. If it is nice and red like new ATF it should be okay. Whatever you do give it a thorough test drive and see if it shifts properly. A motorhome on a truck chassis is like being fully loaded all the time, so the 32,000 miles would not be the same as a pick-up with the same mileage. If you buy it and it does not already have one, install a transmission fluid temperature guage, and drive so you keep it cool. If everything checked out and the unit was in Washington state, I would need to have someone slap my hand or I would be driving it home. From my experience pulling a camper made from a motor home (prev. owner wanted the truck, I got the unit for $600. 00) you should get around 12 mpg if you cruise below 65. Enjoy. Brad :-laf

I am buying the Motor home, I put a deposit on It yesterday and am picking It up next week. Always had the 24 valve cummings and never had the 12 valve before. Don't know what to expect. I hope I haven't made a mistake with the 12 valve. Might half to hop It up a bit? :-laf

You are speaking of the Dodge application.

On the '95 pusher motorhomes they are 180



You made a good choice with the 12 valve, more reliable than the 24 and cheaper to hop up.

The Scotty motor homes are actually built on a Dodge truck platform, not a pusher type - at least the one I saw down in Temple last year was. It was a nice looking rig, very distinctive with that 2nd Gen shape
