Well I have only 44K miles on my C&C, so with the clutch or DMF failure, (won't know until trans is removed) I'm having Richard in the Tucson branch of Standard Transmission go through the G56 as exploratory and cleaning before I change the oil to "Mobiltrans SHC DC". So if I know the trans is in good shape with the SMF and SBC DD 3250 Clutch, along with the Mercedes approved oil for the G56, it makes since for me as far as the dollar cost goes. The Girdle will be installed when the trany goes back in, so if you look at the cost divided over the life time of the Truck, it works out to be cheaper. I did research the possibility of installing a Eaton 6spd trans, and I believe its possible, but the cost of adapting to the CTD and miscellaneous items was around $10K. I believe the trans will be strong enough for my 23K GCVW, and probably more if needed. TDR wrote a good article on the problems of the G56 and seem to be confident with a SMF and Girdle it can withstand Hotshot duty, or at least have a good chance of it anyway. On another note the G56 is capable of Dodges GCVWR, if the DMF holds up.
EricBu12, in 06 there was little known about the ability of the G56 behind a 5. 9, 6. 7, CTD, and I hate auto's, so I had a hard decision to make. With the 48RE as an example to compare the unknown 68rfe with and the unproven Aison in late 06, before I ordered my C&C in Jan 07, I took my chances on the proven G56 in the medium duty trucks Mercedes Built. I wished I had the luxury of 2 more years to make a decision, I probably would have chosen the Aison, but would have always wondered, what if, if I would have stuck with the G56. If someone delete's a 6. 7 with the 68rfe and up's the HP/TQ they will have to upgrade the trans and spend more dollars than what I'm spending to increase the ability of the G56.
