I recently installed a transmission gauge and located the sending unit in the hot transmission line using the manifold offered by, Janetty, I think. Anyway I'm seeing fluid leaking from the brass connections, tried tightening these up but I really don't want to put any more uummpphh on them.

Is there a sealant I can place on these threads and conections that is suitable?

I remember hearing not to use teflon tape for fear of threads getting into the fluid and clogging things up.

It's somewhat of a pain to get the line off the truck so I want to only do this once... . again. :(

The SO has instructed me to stop staining her driveway, so time is off the essence, know what I mean???

PS

Looking for a used Edge Comp or EZ if there are any out there. I GOT THAT BOMB FEVER!!!!!!

:D :D

tim , we got one of those things sitting in the drain tray of our trans bench . you need to figure out if you over tightended it or haven't tightened it enough .

as far as sealant , bandaid fix . the brass ferule is what makes the seal , if its to tight it crimps the line and will need to be cut off , if it crimped the line to tight you will need to replace the line , you should have spent the extra 30 bucks and bought the factory line with the port .

where in the line did you install it , we just took the line off a 98 12v last nite and you may be able to cut this line , cut a small piece off your old line and try again , this line uses the hose with check ball like the factory line with the port so its not a direct replacement for your 99 line .

bad thing is this is a messy operation as the convertor will drain , unless you have a convertor with a drain plug , then you can drain it ... let me know if i can help you out soon before the line gets pitched .

It appears like the threads are leaking not the ferrol. But it's hard to tell. I don't think it is the overtightened ferrol scenario as it was leaking from the get go. I was cautiuos not to overtighten on assembly and gave her about another 1/2 turn recently.

The manifold is located between the hot line to the cooler exchange mounted on the engine and the rear line on the transmission.

I've observed the leak trail and pretty sure it is between the brass fitting and the manifold connection, not the ferrol side. However I've thought and been wrong in the past. :(

Before I tried any old thread sealer I thought there might be a specific type that would be best for the transmission fluid exposure.

You may be on the right track though, replace with factory line. I don't want to though "if" there is a fix.

Thanks. Anyone with other options? If not I guess it's off to the dealer parts counter.

The old oilfield mechanic's standby for sealing against petroleum products is Permatex #2 (non-hardening). If it's leaking around a ferrule, however, it won't help. :(

Thread sealer

I understand your concern about using teflon tape as a sealer in the transmission, but there is a way.

Take a 2-3" strip of teflon tape, cut it in two lengthwise. This will leave you with a strip about 1/8" wide.

Take out the leaking fitting, and examine it closely. You will see where the threads are making good contact with the female threads in the other fitting. This is often about three or four threads up from the beginning of the fitting.

Wrap the teflon tape on the threads that are making contact, and not on the threads near the end of the fitting. This will keep any small pieces of tape from getting into the ATF.

I don't believe that any of the tape can get through the trans filter anyway, but being safe is better than being sorry.

good luck, Greg L

tim , its leaking at the ferule , not the nut , the nut does not do any sealing other thanclamping everything together , give it another half turn , the leak is between the ferule and the maifold connection .

when i asked where you have it i was asking exact location in the line , ie: is it over on the pass side just before the line swings up to go to the heat exchanger ? the line i have makes that turn then ends as it has the rubber line after that . if you have to redo you connections , you can cut a bit off the line before it makes the turn , manifold back on and use the line i have to remake to other side as things will be to short otherwise , the line is your for cost to get it to you .

but i would tighten them some more , its a big line and you need to wrench it some to get it to seal .

Thanks I'll pull it off and then I'll be able to corerctly judge the ummpphh I put into it. Unfortunately I have it on the vertical end of the line and I think what you've described will be too short. I'll try a little permatex #2 on the threads and install again. It's worth the try.

If all that fails $$$$$$$

Thanks all:) :)

Anyone have that used Edge for sale????

I had one too......

No leaks on mine. But after my DTT upgrades I went with the factory line from a 95? that has a sender port built in. Gauranteed not to leak that way and can hold the higher pressures better. I think they are around $90 at the stealer.

That's the best option. If you had to seal it I would try Teflon tape. Just make sure it only gets on the threads of the caps. As stated earlier if it's the ferruls leaking you might have an out of round pipe.
