This is cool

man they are making this spyware hard to kill. i've got one LOP.com thing that keeps giving me some casino pop up that gets past my google pop up blocker...

i've run spybot and it comes back clean. . i have spyware doctor too but it crashes just as it finishes the scan [spybot does that 50% of the time too]

any other anti spyware programs that are worth trying to run to clean up my system? [free ones??]

I had some stuff sneak in past ad-aware (lavasoft). I was able to get rid of it with SpySubtract. You can download a free version.

They should shoot the people that write that stuff.

Mike

PS- Trend Micro has a good online virus scanner free also...

Guys,

Ad-aware (lavasoft) is probably the best there is... with that said there is a lot of spyware that needs to be removed manually and it can be a pain because of registry entries and related crap.

To be honest with ya the only real way of keeping a system clean is by re-installing every once in a while. Everyone will jump on me about this because they should not have to do that and they would lose all there customizations and files and related. Well, that can happen anyways and you should have a backup. In the UNIX world once a box has been comprimised the only "safe" way to promise it is clean is to wipe the drive and re-install.

Your computer will run faster anyways once you do this and if you use your computer with the mindset that you will need to backup, be able to recover and reinstall anyways then it is a breeze.

Now... I will say this: All adware gets installed because the user has done something to allow it to happen, like installing garbage off the internet, clicking and opening unknown attachments and generally not being careful as to what you let on your PC. I was proud of being able to say that I had not been infected with any virus, adware or other garbage for many years cause I was carefull... until my son starting using my workstation,,, :)

Then all he!! broke loose and now I re-install every 4 - 6 months or so...

Good luck!!

Thanks

Phil

i hate my computer. i installed that lavasoft program and ran it, and at the end after it was done, it wouldn't let me click on the "next" button, and then my comp freezes to the point that ctrl+alt+del don't work and i had to hit the manual reset button...

Throw out all spec's of your computer. Lets start doing some troubleshooting. Lockups are telling you it has a problem. The hard part is finding out if it is hardware related or software.

The first thing I would suggest is download this program and burn it to a disk. Then boot from the disk and run memtest86. Lets find out if you have some bad memory.

system is...

p3 500

12gb internal HD

384mb ram

win 98

external stuff [don't know if it is important or not- all through usb]

80gb external HD

scanner

printer

digital cam

flash drive [this one messed my pc up about 4-5 weeks ago but i thought i had it fixed]

i tried running the lavasoft in safe mode and it crashed there too...

i am getting a new PC soon [just after christmas when stuff is on sale] but i want/need to keep this running too

Download this program and run it. It will tell us a lot more of the computer than you know right now.

Give me the motherboard name if it finds it. The chipset it uses and so on.

Have you ran system file checker. If not go to start>run> sfc . The long way is Start>programs>accessories>system tools> system information> tools tab. Replace any bad files it finds.

Have you checked device manager to see if it is showing any problems?

Is this win98 first edition or second edition?

What I have read on the internet about sypware is kinda sneaky.

We aren't the only ones who know about Ad-Aware, and spysubtract, norton anti-virus, etc. etc. They write codes that will replace there . exe files, move them, or corrupt them, or maybe even write code that will make them crash while operating.

Our computer at the shop is used by alot of people and everymorning when I get there I've got to spend 30 minutes tracking down all types of spyware/adware so the computer will run smoothly again.

Here's what I can say... If you get infected with spyware, don't reboot! Upon reboot spyware pretty much sets up shop. Even though you get rid of the obvious files, hidden files will re-install it again. OH, What fun!

Ebates, Money Maker, VX2, Cool Web Search, Web Offer and Deal Helper, are the ones I battle against. Deal Helper being the one I just can't slide off the hard drive.

Good that helped.

That Asus board was top of the line when that CPU came out. The Intel 440 BX chip set was a stable platform. Here is a link with some info on that board.

Your running windows 98 first edition looks like. 98 had some problems with USB devices. Have you got all the windows updates? There was a update a long time ago for USB problems. That update was rolled up into a service pack if I remember right.

You mentioned that a USB pin drive messed it up a few weeks ago. I bet that is still part of the problem. Boot into safe mode. Go into device manager. Remove any double items you find there. Then reboot and see if it finds any new devices. Leave that pin drive unhooked and see if the lockups stop.

Your showing 4 sticks of ram. I would still run memtest86 and see if any is bad. A bad stick will cause all sorts of problems. Mostly all lockup related. That program is on the boot disk link I gave. That CD boots to DOS and has a lot of other nice little prorams on it.

I would also move your two bigger sticks of memory to slots 1 & 2. You allways want your biggest sticks in the first two slots. Windows 98 normaly has a memory footprint of around 120 meg. With your setup it is using the first 2 sticks just for OS it self. This will slow performance down some.

That board will also accept any 100 MGZ P3 CPU. You would need a slot to socket 370 converter. If you want to up the CPU. I have a Abit converter I can send you. :D
