Cold/below 50 degrees mine does on cold start. Don't like that! Liked the way my 93 ran cold but not this 03 its a lope until high idle kicks in. Wish mine idled a tad higher hot also.

What exactly do you mean by "lope"?

My idle does vary slightly when sitting... it's almost like like it just "clicks" and sounds different for a second then "clicks" back. I just thought it was the computer adjusting timing or fueling. Is this what you mean by lope?

Jeff

I had a thread up a few weeks back when my buddy had this problem with his 03 . It was the lift pump. His seems fine now. By the way I was told by my dealer that Dc won't allow them to change it without approval first. They have a # they call to contact Dc for the lift pump or the injection system. ;)

If this is what I think you are talking about, my '03 does it too. Really noticeable on cold starts. Here's what happens... I turn the key and wait for the engine heater light to go off. The same time the light goes off, I hear a slight click from the engine compartment. I think it is the heater going off. I start the truck and turn on the dash lights to check guage readings. After a few seconds, I hear the same click, the dash lights dim slightly, and the idle changes. A few seconds after that, click, lights come back and idle changes again. This repeats for about 3 minutes, then it kicks to high idle and runs smooth until I drive off. The change in idle really seems to be tied into the block heater cycling... at least on my truck. Hope this gives you some more ideas.

let us clear up confusion i know what it sounds like when a grid heater is cycling that is not what we are talking about here. but some of you might be.

i am talking about a rummmmrummmmmrummmmmrummmmm

and when you add an exhaust system you can here it even more. i can detect the slightest movement of my truck in the "ru" part of the cycle

DITTO

That is what mine sounds like also except the lope is at random intervals. Catcracker, what have you found out about it so far?

Mine has the lope to I think mine come with all the problems they paint has orange pell look to it my doors leak so much air it sounds like a wind storm in the truck. My mileage has droped from 18 to 14 and I have no power anymore my stock 96 will run all over it:{

it happens with everyone truck... . IN the right conditions (weather) these truck have way more gadgets that kick in and off the help the engine, either get warm or run more stable. I called my friend at the dodge dealer i bought my truck at and he said it is ok, he said the thing to watch for is smoke, if there is access smoke then there is a problem..... my truck's rpm bounces about 200 - 250 rpms when the weather is at the right condition...

Then its normal because they don't know why it lopes. None of the other model years did and gas efi engines don't. Maybe one day a flash update or?But normal its NOT. Its just a good answer to I DON"T KNOW WHY IT LOPES!:-{}I rather hear I DON"T KNOW then its normal.

It dosen't mean its normal. I was in auto repair 25years. WHENEVER it was unknown it was said to be NORMAL. It shouldn't lope under normal conditions. saw lots of ITS normal get repaired days,months,years later with updates. I guess no power,stalling etc on 6. 0 Fords is NORMAL also. Just a example. Use to get that answer from engineering and I'd reply so YOU DON"T KNOW RIGHT!They would then say well yea were working on it.

engine lope

I also recently developed a loping/surging at idle. It ran fine, but was a noticeable and annoying sound at idle. It was just barley detectable on the tach. I work at a dealer and the engine guy followed the troubleshooting procedure in a recent issue of Master Tech. All the pressure and volumes turned out ok, but when he looked at the pressure difference between the sensor and the rail there was a 600 psi difference (500 psi max difference). He then called star and they authorized a new injector pump. It solved the problem. He said that the sensor on the pump was the only thing wrong with it, however the sensor is not serviceable yet(have to replace the entire injector pump). It took our engine guy about 3 hrs. to do all the troubleshooting.

P. S. I don't have any engine/exhaust mods. and I have the S. O. motor. hope this helps. I have 17,000 on it and changing the fuel and air filters did not help at all.
