lost carrier bearing

Summit,

How many miles are on your truck and was it covered under warranty?

My carrier bearing seems to be fine so far but I only have 10,000 miles on the clock.

I have been reading these posts for about a year now and this is the first time I have heard of this.

Lost mine in the 1st year, somewhere between 10 and 20K miles.

Would have to check service records to be more specific.

$150 just for the bearing, correct? No warranty?

TC

I lost mine on the 97 at about 120,000. The stealer I mean dealer wanted something like 200 to 250$ for parts and labor:eek::mad: I said screw that and just bought the barring for 135$ and installed it myself. The only hard part is the barring has to be pressed off and then the new one has to be pressed on. Mine went while I was at college and we had a 50 ton pnuematic press in the shop, that sure made short work of the removal and the installation.

i'm right at 64,000mi, so much for warranty , installed lift at 29,000mi & had a vibration so the manufacurer sent a carrier drop "kit" that made it go away. didn't give any warning, i just let off throttle coming into a town & it just let go. had to just idle in third gear for almost 5mi to get to shop. LATER

Carrier bearings usually last a LONG time. I've never had one go fast - they always made plenty of noise in advance. They usually don't even have to get very bad before hearing them because they're so close to the cab. Craig

I replaced my carrier bearing at about 75,000 miles. It would knock when accelerating or lifting off the throttle because the metal shield was contacting the housing. While I had the driveshaft out I replaced all the u-joints at the same time. Took the shaft to a local machine shop to have the carrier bearing pressed on and off, did the u-joints myself. I thought the carrier bearing was only around $90 - but don't quote me on that, going by memory.

Ok... so I'm a complete dork (or I haven't been reading the TDR enough),

when you say muffler bearing, do you mean the things that hold the muffler up?

Sorry if these ?s are amateurish...

yeah, inbetween the fufu valve and the sisperator.

az its the bearing in the middle of the rear drive shaft (two piece) on the ex-cab long boxes only.

carrier bearing

Just replaced my bearing mount at 29,000. It had beat it's way out of the rubber. Bearing seemed to be fine. Cost about 6 bucks from JC Whitney.

I lost mine at less than 1000 miles. Dealer fixed it right up. I think I drove it for a hundred miles befire I fugured out what happened. Here's the pics of the damaged one.

I caught mine before it got that bad. But no I have a vibration all the time. The faster you go the worse it gets.

did you get the right one? parts guy said there's two different one's. don't know what the difference is other than price, one was $94 , other $155. of course mine's the more expensive one.

I only replaced the rubber mount that surrounds the bearing. Can the slip joint be installed incorrectly, too give me that vibration? The only other thing I did at the same time was installed a Power Edge EZ module.

TNT, some slipjoints have a spline that's blocked out so it only goes on one way. If not, just make sure the slip yoke lines up with the yoke on the other end(yokes on each end of a shaht always line up). Craig

Carrier bearings got EXPENSIVE! The last one I did was on a 1T chevy for $25.

I went out and check that I had the yokes lined up properly. I did. Still don't know what is causing the vibration.
