Lost turbo whine

I like mechanical noise... I like the sound of a diesel engine, the hum of mud tires, forged pistons and mechanical camshafts etc. So I've heard that if I take the silencer ring out of the turbo inlet I could hear the turbo whining and I thought I might like that too. So I pulled the hose off the inlet only to find the ring was already gone! I've never heard the turbo yet. Some have said it's too annoying for them, but I can't hear it at all. Is there something else I need to do in order to hear it?

As far as I know, none of the 1st gens have a silencer ring on the turbo. If you want to hear it, you can do the "swiss cheese airbox" business. With two 4-1/2" holes and my K&N I can hear A-LOT more turbo whistle . The barking when you let off the go-pedal sounds real cool too. But, my K&N lets some dust by it so I'm going to change to a BHAF. Got the BHAF today (it's huge), just waiting for the OldSmoky mount to arrive. Will let you know how it sounds when it's in.

Also, if you try a straight pipe, the sound will cary through the tailpipe!!!!

As far as the sound of the straight exhaust pipe, it sounds like more bark than whine to me. But it's a sweet soundOo.

For turbo whine, a BHAF in an Old Smokey mount will do the trick.



Even with a 3 " exhaust and muffler I have plenty of turbo sound.

OK thanks for the enlightenment guys. I wasn't going to mention that I didn't see a groove for the snap ring which would retain the silencer... .

With my apparently stock system, what can I do to get an idea as to whether or not I'd like to hear that sound on a continual basis? This before I drill hole or otherwise permanantly alter it. Thanks, Jeff

Remove the stock airbox and let the air filter just rest in that spot. Can't get any cheaper than that! I actually ran mine that way for my entire honeymoon trip down to the states and back to Alaska.
