Loud ENGINE

Hello to everyone,

My 2005 quad cab auto with 14. 500 miles is A loud engine just idleing it is a lot louder then when i first got it two and a half years ago, hear is what i have done Air box PSM buick with the new Amsoil air filter, cool blue hose with silencer removed, MBRP Muffler oil and fuel filter changed every 3000 miles, I no over kill

Oil used Valvoline PB Dino, Fuel Filter new 7 micron stratapore from Geno's Fuel Additive 6oz stanadyne PF with 4oz off stanadyne Lubricity formular the engine runs smooth plenty of power for a stock truck. it is just louder then any other 2005 i have listened to and i mean At Idle, BTW when i replaced my muffler I used never seize and four inck stainless steel straps instead of the original stockers i got thease at deisel manor that way i can change my exhaust without as much trouble every thing is super tight i do not think it is an exhaust problem

could this be a noisy injector or are some just louder then other's any help will be appreciated Thank You

Mine's a little louder now that I put the Smarty programmer to it with a SW5 program (more injector noise). Your silencer removal might kill your warranty (don't know why, or if; just what someone said here). You aren't changing the OIL at 3000, are you? Severe service interval is 7500, regular is 15K.

Yes 3000 miles oil/oil filter/fuel filter, Like I said overkill I know,, back to the engine. has anyone experienced that some cummins are louder then others it's like when i open the hood to listen to the motor it seems that the noise is mostly from the clyinder head region. Nothing wrong that i can tell good power, decent millage around 18 mpg no white smoke smooth idle just noisy.

Yes i have heard that before but someone on this forum must have a good idea of why. I never underestimate the knowledge off our members.

I've got an '05 and, depending on the degree of my sinus congestion, its loudness varies. On cooler humid days the engine's resonance ( stock exhaust ) is not as annoying as it can be when the ambient temps are hot and humidity is low. Its all in my head and most likely, yours too.

my friends 03 is considerably quiter then my 04. 5, and it has 20,000 more miles. 100% stock tho.

That's interesting seems there is something factoring in that we are missing, it would be nice to hear from a diesel mechanic, who hears them all day long and has his opinion off what causes this, And if it is something to worry about

Dad's '03 is A LOT quieter than my '04. 5. Mine sound almost like a hybrid... part VP44, part CP3. Dad says "it sounds like a diesel", unlike when it was new. I think the 04. 5's get louder as they break in.

I get good mileage and good power. I doubt there is anything seriously wrong. I do have a "skip" but that's an old story for other threads.

my 03 slowly got louder and louder... had injectors go several times, and also had a valve go which both sound similar. . a ticking noise that gets progressivly louder with time. Other injector signs are longer cranking times and signs of more smoke. You can get your injectors checked at a dodge dealer with their DRB. they can shut off each injector at a time and see when the noise quits, but you cant always tell which injector is going if all of them are slowly going. You could try hitting her hard with some more diesel conditioner too.

Do what you want, but why waste oil (resources, money, time, etc. )? No offense, nothing personal, but you have an 11 quart sump capacity for a reason.



Unless you don't drive it much, or have it BoMBed (therefore creating more contaminants an oxidation), there's no reason to drive less than 7500 miles before you change the oil. Unless you just a) enjoy changing the oil, and/or b) don't mind paying for more than double the amount of oil/filters than you need.



Frankly, unless you're doing any of the aforementioned and/or fall under other criteria for severe service "B" schedule, you should be able to get 15,000 miles off a lube servicing (03 to 07 5. 9s with no EGR).

My 06 is louder now (27K) than when I first bought it. I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. I think the engine breaks in and loosens up. Also the valve train gets a little more clearance with age,,, that's what I hear most anyway.



I adjusted the valves on my 02 early just because I felt I had too much valve train noise. I got it quiet for a while but then it loosened up after time. WHen I adjusted them they really weren't that far off.



I think we hear the engine at it's best in the beginning (test drive and all). In my book nothing to be concerned about as longs as it runs smooth and still supplies good power.

My 04. 5 is considerably louder at 60k miles than it was when new also... I do get decent mileage (just returned from MI->TN trip and averaged 19. 3 mpg @70-75mph (going there trip) and 18. 8 mpg @ 75-85mph (return trip), and I seem to have plenty of power but it is noisier than before...

I had an 01. 5 - the 04. 5 is still NO WHERE NEAR how loud the 01. 5 was... !

I have full intake (K&N), straight pipe (Cat-back) and a Rokk-Tech Timing sensor, but the engine itself (like stick your head under the hood next to valve cover) seems to produce more noise... Valves were adjusted at about 35k to be sure they were in spec (the 01. 5 valves were WAY OUT at 50k!!)

An 03 and 05 I hang with have also gotten slightly louder with time/age but not quite as much as mine...

Do me a favor. "blib" your throttle with so much peddle force to say, get to 1000rpm's. . Do the same in hte 03 and 05.



I've notice my typical "blib" that does 1000rpm in my truck did like 1800 in my friends 03 (auto, not sure if that makes a differnce vs my stick).

Yes - very true statement... The response on the 03 has to do with the fact that the ECM was not as "involved" in fuel management...



In a similar test, the 03 will brake-torque and roast the rear tires by holding lightly on the brake and depressing the accelerator... The 04. 5 will NOT brake torque unless you let it roll a bit... The ECM defuels based on seeing no forward momentum, so it limits the power (even though the engine is rated at +45 ft pounds over the 03)...



Of course, this is talking about STOCK trucks...
