Drove to MD from SC today pulling the 9500 LB trailer. Got the full symphony of Cummins sounds. My favorite is hogging up a grade in 5th gear about 1900 RPM. The other lovely sound was descending Catochin Mtn near Thurmont Md in 4th gear using just the EB. Who needs a radio?

WHat lovely sounds do you have to share from your favorite engine?

Ya know Ken, you are absolutely right... love all those sounds. Especially that faint turbo whistle when she's pouring on the power and the RPMS are increasing with no effort it seems. You can feel that power pouring on. . and you can hear it too. I also noticed faint turbo whistle when using EB at times. I even love the way she shuts down. You can feel the power and the compression kickback with that shudder at the end. Thanks for bringing it up.
It is a wonderful machine is it not? :)

Good posts, I agree!! Several years ago we went to a family reunion in Montana and we took the Daughter in law and the two grand kids. They were p/o'ed because I would not allow any music while traveling, only stopped:)

I almost never use the stereo while driving, if my truck hicups I know it. Love the sound, pulling, turbo spool down and exhaust brake.

Nick

I like the turbo sound when you have a load hooked, it's summer time, windows are down. I was pulling into a campground and stopped to ask the boy for directions. Getting moving again you get the loud turbo whine even before you start moving... love it.

When I get that look and statement of how noisy my engine is I just respond by this---

I term the 12 valve sound as the----SOUND OF P-O-W-E-R--- this always get the

goat of a ford owner.

Love those sounds!! Hey, you're only about a 1/2hr north of where I live. I am just south of Frederick off 270

When O/O I ran 6 inch straight stacks. You could tell that the guy in front of you was tired because he was weaving all over the road. With the window down more than likely. I would run up the RPM and get next to his window and let off the long peddle and let the JAKE WAKE HIM UP. #@$%!#@$%!

Sounds like a BIG attack, LOL!

Cummins Diesel Engine Sounds.

I've driven from Phoenix to the midwest (OH, IN, MI, WV, Ontario, Canada & many other states) in the past. Normally, I drive with at least the drivers window down so as to listen to the engine sounds. Don't play the radio, only the CB to be aware of what is going on along the highway.

My old '91. 5 W-250 had Banks exhaust & had a unique sound. The trailer RV storage lot in Northern AZ. always knew when I was arriving. The '03, 3500 has Magnaflow exhaust aong with an AFE fresh air intake system with a metal tube going from the A/F to the intake on the turbo. I removed the silencer ring on the turbo & the "whistle" really resonates inside that metal tube (Torque Tube, as I recall). When I first installed it, I thought I had finally overdone it but, have since gotten used to the sound.

All my friends have Duramaxxes & love the quietness of their trucks & can't stand my trucks. That's fine with me. It's kind of like having a Harley with quiet mufflers!!!

Pulling a hill or mountain grade in the '03 is like listening to a symphony for me. Must be brain damage!!!

Everyone around here gets a kick out of my truck when I shut it down. With the straight exhaust, the turbo whistles as it spins down. Grandkids think it sounds like a jet aiplane. I love the strictly "POWER" sound when driving it and when weather allows always have my window down to hear it. Hope to post pictures one day, as my 16 year old grandson painted it. It was fun to build and more fun to drive.

I really enjoyed driving up and over Catoctin Mt on MD 77. Hogging up and then whistling down. Fun! The row of cars behind me weren't smiling though, LOL!

Some states will give you a ticket for holding up, like 3 or more cars... . dumb law:-laf

MY sister and husband got one in Montana last year towing his sled pulling truck. I told him a Dodge/Cummins will fix that... he has a Chevy w/6. 0 gasser:rolleyes: I never could figure out why they put all that money in a sled puller (540 cid Dart motor) then tow it with a POS. :-laf

If ya roll down the passenger window, they sound better, especially next to a rock wall or bridge.

Nick

I don't need my widows rolled down I can hear my engine just fine (Mule and Moose)!

I love listening to the radio while driving. Hearing the engine in the back ground is a plus.

There is a short 2 lane street by my business with buildings on both sides (almost on the road) I get surround sound when I'm accellerating thru it, probably the reason no one is on the sidewalks when it is time for me to go home.

The old timers used to tell me the old Cummins 275's with the back draft manifold and straight stacks would break windows on the Jake on narrow streets and close buildings. I used to try but never succeeded:-laf

That engine has to be the best sounding engine ever. With 7" mufflers it was just right. Straights were too loud and 9" mufflers were too quiet.
