Low cost oil drain pan

The other day, I bought a oil drain pan that worked very well for $4. 77 (no tax) at WalMart. It's yellow and has a 5 gallon capacity, handle and a pour spout which makes it easy to transfer old oil into my 5 gallon plastic bucket with lid that I use to haul the oil for disposal. There is a curled lip around the top to prevent the oil from hitting the bottom and spashing out.

Bob I think that one is for antifreeze draining. . ? If its wide open on the top then it is. The 15 quart oil drain pan should be same design with a pour spout and cap but the top is closed in with a drain hole in the top of the cover so to speak. Its black in color too... I have both of them BTW. Both work great, just remember to dump/drain its contents before dropping 12 qts of used 15-40 into it... .

Could be. I saw the pan with the closed top and drain hole. I didn't know if it would take the flow of oil or not without making a mess so went with the open top.

You are disposing of that oil?



Invest in a cheap inline electric fuel pump from the autoparts stores. About $20 and get a fuel filter for a Ford fuel injection. The filter that is about 2. 5" across and maybe 3" long. Set things up so the filter is between the suction line and the pump. pump that oil into a clean can and dump it into your truck's fuel tank.



Get twice the bang for that $$ you spent on the oil change. Save the environment while you are at it. I'm getting about 30-35 mpg effective measured against the diesel I purchase.



Improves the lubricity a bunch and ups the horsepower a tad.

Are you serious about running the used oil as fuel? That would be great if we could do it but... ...

I saw the pan with the closed top and drain hole. I didn't know if it would take the flow of oil or not without making a mess so went with the open top.

It won't - especially when you get hot oil on your hand and let go of the drain plug and it drops in that little hole while 3 gallons come pouring out. Don't ask me how I know!

Yep, that thought went through my mind, as well.



I did my own version of the "dropped, hot plug". I nailed my "crazy bone" when I jerked my arm away from the hot oil. My right hand tingled for the rest of the day. Man, that hurt.

there is nothing wrong with doing this, but don't try it with synthetics [they don't burn well... ]



heck, even cummins has a system like this that automatically takes engine lube oil and pumps it into the fuel tank. i think it is called centnal system by cummins. . [it is on their website eh... ]

anybody know what this does to the injection pump,lift pump,fuel filter? are they affected in any way? sorry if it sounds stupid but i think this would be great thing to do if it dont mess anything up.

I've read abou burning used oil but I'd just as soon not do it in my rig. I haul the oil to a friend's place of business where he uses used oil to heat his shop.

I recycle engine and transmission oil by pouring it in my home furnace fuel tank.
