Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Low Oil In Filter

While changing the oil in my truck today, I noticed that when I removed the oil filter there was very little oil in the filter. Typically when I remove the filter, it is so full of oil that it spills out when I take it off. And I always fill the new filter with oil when I install it. Why would the oil be low in the filter? Is that a problem?

It is possible that if the engine had not been run in awhile that the oil could siphon out of the filter back to the oil pan. Many oil filters have a valve in them to prevent this but the valve can fail. Does the engine have good oil pressure when it is running? and does the oil pressure come up right away when the engine starts? If the answer to both is yes, then you can probably write the event off to a filter issue

Some filters have check valves and some dont Cummins (Fleetguard) do not have check valves no problem

I have always run Fleetguard filters on every cummins I have owned (99, 02, 04. 5, 06 and an 01) and everytime I go to change the oil the filter is about 1/3 to 1/2 full. Never had an oil pressure issue with any of them. I actually prefer to have the filter drain back a bit so I dont get oil all over when Im pulling the filter down.

Filters with the anti-drainback valves are application specific. Why include extra cost to your filter if it is mounted upright. It already stays pretty much full on its own. You would see the drainback valve in sideways and upside down mounted filters.
