I'm looking to buy a new 2500 and have almost everything figured out except for whether to go with 2WD or 4WD. We really only need 4WD a couple of times a year but. . when you need it you need it.

My problem is that the 4WD trucks appear about a foot higher than the same truck with 2WD. I don't understand the rational for this because the ground clearance (to bottom of transfer case, differential) appears the same.

Is there a compelling reason for the truck to be so high? Is it possible to lower it to look like the 2WD without screwing anything up?

4x4 vs 4x2

Looking at both our '99 and '01 it looks like front drive line clearance would be the only problem.

Also -- Check value difference between 4x4 and 4x2 used vehicles.

You can't lower the front, the axle will hit the oil pan and the frame is in the way. Let me rephrase that (ahem) "You can't affordably lower the front end on a 4x4".

DC offers a kit to lower the back but I don't know the details.

They make them that way so it can function as a 4wd vehicle used in an offroad application. Dodge doesn't offer an Urban 4x4 like chevy does lol. Chevy puts 4x4 stickers on so you can actualy tell without looking under it! :) With a dodge or even a furd. . its obvious.

My 2wd(wanted 4x4. . found awsome deal on this one) did great in the snow and ice once I put some weight in the back(1k of batteries). So if you don't like the hieght a 2wd might be your best bet unless you plan on getting offroad. My 2wd ram has a hard time in wet grass!

LOL well the day after I got the truck I was trying to get up onto a berm to tailgate and watch some drag racing. It took me a couple of tries. Considering I had a lifted and locked 4x4 Toyota before hand it was rather frustrating lol. I need a sticker that says PAVEMENT ONLY for the dash
