Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Truck won't start

Looking forward ( yeah right) to my first lift pump change, which appears to be coming soon. My FP numbers have been steadily dropping despite a new fuel filter about 2 k ago.

I have gone over the instructions both on the TDR and in my Shop manual and it seems pretty straight forward. I thinking I'm going with the "from above method"

I only have a few questions: 1) Will I have to crack injector lines after the new pump is in to get the truck to start? 2) How much, if any Diesel will run out of the fuel line when I pop off the quick connect at the pump inlet? 3) I have read acouple of post that say to prime the pump with oil or fuel prior to installing it so that the pump will seal and pump immediately. Is this correct ( manual says nothing about it) What should I use to prime it? Just dump it in the inlet side I assume so that it gets down into the pump?

ANything else that mine helps would be appreciated.

BTW My pump will still pass the NEW DC spec ( I think) as it has 11psi at idle and 5. 8psi at WOT. I was cruising at 75mph at 8. 8psi this weekend. I should have had them replace it acouple of months ago when it would have failed.

Thanks in adavance

TSB 14-002-03 is the current D/C transfer pump diagnostic standard. It's more concerned with flow than pressure.

I installed from above on my model year 2000 Ram. I didn't prime the pump. I was able to light off the engine without opening any lines beyond the VP44 inlet. You will leak a bit of fuel when the old transfer pump is removed.

Follow that thread!

WyoJim Is right. Read TowPro's directions, did my own as instructed before vacation trip in June. Took me 45 minutes, bled no lines and truck fired up after cranking twice. Still showing 15 psi. !

Cool thanks guys.

The only problem that I see that I might have, but alot of others would have too, is that at the VP inlet I have a tapped banjo for my FP gauge and not the schrader to bleed the line. When I installed the gauage I didnot have to bleed the lines, so I'm thinking that If i switch the Schrader banjo that I took out with the banjo on the outlet of the fuel filter housing that it would be easier to bleed if needed?

Most likely I would NOT have any extra hands around when I did this and would need my truck to be in service quickly. I'm on call 24/7 for work and HAVE to respond when the pager goes off (which is too often!) So any other tips for a "single person" LP change would be helpful too.

Thanks again for all the info.

I personally don't think your pump needs replaced.

Those are the same readings I have had for the last three years and 50,000 miles.
