For those of you that have installed a Mag-Hytec Double Deep transmission pan on your 2003 truck.

Were there any clearance problems with skid plates, etc. .

Does anyone have a picture of the Double-Deep on their truck?

The double deep pan is the first thing I plan to change on my truck. It's the 47RE, and I'm wondering how easy is the install. Luckily I have access to a shop and lift. The install looks pretty straight forward, but I had a couple questions.

I've got 19k on it, with 99% freeway driving and only 3-4 short car hauling trips.



Anything tricky or worth mentioning?

What kind of fluid is most common/recommended?

I don't have trans temp gauge yet, but can I put a sensor in now to avoid pulling the pan and adding it later? (I may just buy a gauge before doing the pan)

And where's the best price? (Geno's?)

I didn't install it (Scott at massdiesel did when they did my DTT valve body), but it is pretty simple. . Remove the stock pan, take a shower in ATF, remove the stock filter, add a spacer block to where the filter went, stick a new filter on the spacer block, and then stick the new pan on, refill with ATF. I think that covers it.



I put the sensor in the pan (it has a pre-drilled plug you can use for it) since there were no other easy solutions at the time. If you want a more accurate reading, Massdiesel (www.massdiesel.com) has a new cooler line now that you can put the sensor in. I plan to do that whenever I get around to the next stage of transmission upgrades. .



I'm still tossing around the fluid question myself. I am running regular ATF+3 in it now, but I am pondering going to amsoil universal ATF. Not sure. .
 
Why use a spacer? Isn't the oil two inches above the pan bottom just as good as the oil at the bottom of the pan? There's no doubt it's getting circulated. Just puzzled by the logic.

Personally I'll stick with Chrysler ATF. How can it be wrong?

Lastly, my gauge is all wired in and waiting for me to install the sensor in the pan. Temps in the outline are hotter and vary more but I'm more concerned with overall temps of the fluid. Very hot fluid right from the TC is going to be cooled within a few seconds and isn't telling you what the temp is in the sump where it's going to be that temp for a whole lot longer. Just personal preference but mine will be in the pan. :D

If you follow the instructions, most of the ATF spill can be avoided. Starting from the back of the pan, after you get to the front, pick one rear corner and loosen it and the two around it about 1 turn. The fluid will start draining out of that corner. Keep working the screws out a turn at a timeand move two another two either side of the corner. I didn't spill a drop!! Clean the transmission and the new pan out with solvent. Tighten to 12-16lb/ft. There was another discussion of stripping the screws out. I used Mopar ATF+4 because I read on one of the oil sites that it is synthetic. $6. 80 a qt at the s..... ealer.
 
Sounds pretty straight forward. Hopefully my tape and floss trick will keep the mess to a mininum. I duct tape a piece of dental floss to the oil/transmission pan corner when I open it, and the fluid <usually> runs down the floss into the catch pan.

Time to order some gauges and the pan. Thanks!

I'd imagine the spacer is to help ensure it is able to pick up fluid if the truck is at an angle that may cause the fluid to slosh off one way or the other.



The other reason is that the DD pan comes with the spacer and they say to install it. :)
