Well men, old Rosco is not a happy camper  . This morning I went under the truck to see if I could move the spare tire a bit to make some clearance and while under the truck I noticed the cover is leaking oil. This is after I followed the directions and filled the unused bottom bolt hole with with Mopar axle RTV and properly torqued the cover.

Also, I moved the tire toward the rear as much as possible and it does help. However, I imagine that if you hit a big bump the tire would move back to it's original position since the cable is under tension and wants to pull it forward anyway. As Bill and Joseph stated, the only safe way is to make a "relocation bracket" for the spare.

Another thing, Mag Hytec is selling the "GM" cover to us and although it does bolt up I think probably works better on GM trucks (From looking at a couple of GM dually's I think their pumpkin/housing is a little different than ours). For example, you get a little notice with the cover that say's " on Dodge trucks it may be necessary to fill the bottom bolt hole with rtv because the O-ring on the cover may leak". Apparently this leak is not a problem with the GM axle.

So, since I don't like this leak or the fact that I need to relocate the tire, the cover is going to be removed and I will kiss 4 quarts of fresh Amsoil good-bye.

Anybody want a slightly used cover :D ?

Well guys I discovered the source of the leak. Mag-Hytec has it all wrong. It does not leak because of the extra unused bolt hole. It leaks because to the left of the bolt hole the casting is a little different and the oring falls in the cavity at that point.

I installed the OEM re-usable on top of the oring. I'll report back.

hoot, have you contacted mag hytec? WHen I emailed them a while back to ask if they'd make a dodge specific cover due to the tire fitment issue etc, they played totally dumb.

I used RTV on the whole thing just like there was no gasket and the leak is gone... ... ... ... I wonder if removing the built in gasket and filling the slot with bondo or something similar then using the original o-ring with some bolts that you could torque to normal spec would work?

In this picture you can see the impression the oring made. It goes under the bottom hole just fine but as it goes up on the angle towards the left you see where it falls over the cavity at that radius. That's where I diverted the oring groove. It looks like its holding fine.

From the ground to the top of the rear wheel opening is 39 3/4 inches empty.

Would some one measure their 4WD to see what it measures.

Also the measurement of a 2500 2WD and 4WD would be nice to know, and while we're at it, a SRW 3500.

Thanks,

Well, go figure on this one. My '03, DRW 4x4 measures 41 -3/4" on the left side and 43" on the right. No load other than my fairly heavy toolbox which is forward in the bed.

Lessee. . maybe the reason I don't notice it is that I carry my wallet in my left rear pocket ?... or ??. . I'll have to measure it again after I drive it next. That seems a bit much of a difference for a pretty level driveway. . 1 -1/4" ??

I have been planning on removing the spacers from under the springs to lower the rear end, but now I wonder about the Mag Hytec cover I have sitting on my dining room table fighting with my spare tire... .

See this thread about the spacers...

Revised Mag Hytec ?

The Mag Hytec I received from them about 10 days ago, after a phone call explaining my concerns with the hole, leaking, etc. is a model

AA14-11. 5a

and from the discussion I had with them, is for the American Axle casing that Dodge uses. It has a rerouted path for the O-ring that is very similar to the diversion groove that Yo Hoot did with his dremel. I have a picture prepared, but can't figure out how to include it.

Gerry

I think this will show it... if not, it is now in my area in the Reader's Rigs section. .

Gerry could you email me that picture? I want to see it and I'll post it for you.

-- email address removed -- thanks

My cover specifically says GM 11. 5

I called Mag-Hytec a while back and they said the GM cover is the one to use. Seems like Mag-Hytec is a little out of touch with it's customer. Must be the "A" revision that now works on both applications. They also dumped the "GM" in the name.

I called them today but all the important people were at a show in Lost Wages. I'll call Monday and straighten those guys out :-laf

The pic is viewable by clicking on the "View Reader's Rigs Gallery" by my name... ..... and I sent it to Yo Hoot as well...

Mine doesn't have 'GM' on it. I will have a picture of the ID Tag on it in my gallery shortly.

When I called and talked to the folks at Mag Hytec I was talking to Jerry Rothlisberger and conveyed my concerns about the 'leakage' and was advised they had overcome that and would send me the improved version. That appears to be the case... to wit... . the "a" model... and no "GM" on it anywhere.

When I installed my mag-hytech It did leak a little... . I thought maybe I didn't let the dab of RTV silicone, where the bottom hole is, set up enough. I thought I would have to take it off and re install the cover..... but a funny thing happened, the leak stopped, and hasn't leaked since... . 20,000 miles later.

I've been waiting for Mag-Hytec to fix this leak path before I buy one. I guess they've fixed it. Many thanks to Hoot & Gerry for the very very helpful pics! :)

One nice feature about the Mag-hytech is the dipstick..... it is full, and not leaking. I actually overfilled it a little on original install, which may have accounted for some leakage.

BTW: I was towing a bob cat tractor the other day, it was a very hot day, the temp outside was 106, I pulled a pretty steep grade and got the differential temp up to 180, that is the hottest I have seen the rearend get... . still doesn't seem all that hot. I am running Mobile1 in the diff.

It should not leak if it's overfull by a little.

180 is nice and cool for a working rear.
