ok, changed the oil today and filled her up to the full line. started it up and the usual black smoke came out, and then i pulled it out the garage, and tapped the throttle and then what seemed to be blue smoke, hard to tell at twilight, started puffin. smells like oil. this happened to me when i first put on my new turbine housing, the housing had a wastegate on it and i had to take off what seemed to be a return oil line from the bottom of the turbo to the bottom of the engine and replace it with a hose to get it all to fit. i dont know if that is a common thing to do or i did something wrong or what. but i noticed that after i changed the housing i smelled burning oil and i started to use oil. never did prior to the housing change. seemed that the oil was used to a certain point and that was it. now it is full again and burning once again. should i try another turbo? i have one, my stock one, i replaced with the one on there now, which is also a w1c just another than my stock, as i stated. or can i do something different with that down tube(hose) that i had to rig up. maybe it isnt letting the oil flow fast enough down and its backin up into the turbo? has this ever happened to anyone else, should i shoot it, and push it in a river? im fairly new to all of this diesel stuff, so please, be gentle.

With what you said about it starting to do this when you changed the housing, and now the oil, it makes me think you have a drain-back problem. I would check the drain tube for kinks or pinches and make sure it has a free flow to the engine. If for any reason the drain is obstructed the oil will back up in the turbo and cause oil to get by the seals.

Fresh oil, because the viscosity modifying chemicals are working as designed, won't drain as well as used oil. So if you have a restriction, it's gonna back up.

Also, what kind of hose did you use? Heater hose cannot handle the hot oil that a turbo creates. It will collapse in on itself or sag to the outside.

You have to get the factory drain line lined up perfectly with the bottom of the turbo to get it all right. I have had trouble before with this seemingly simple task. Last time I did it (my 5th or 6th) took me almost 30 minutes to get the two bolts threaded properly. Loosen up the bolts holding the turbo body to the housing so the body/ impellar will rotate. THen line up the steel line with the bottom of the turbo body, making sure the two mating surfaces line up flush. Put in a new gasket ($. 75 @ DC), and start the bolts threading in there, and tighten them down. I use some loctite to make sure they dont back out. Tighten the turbo to housing bolts and you're ready to roll again.

Good luck.

Yes, try what Daniel suggested... . that gasket can be a PIA to line up sometimes... and go easy on the gasket goop so you don't cause a restriction.

And make sure the drain hose is not kinked or otherwise restricted.
