I personally don't understand how auto trannies work, but I do know manuals. In the Army, I rebuilt trannies and gear boxes on M60 tanks, and other such vehicles, and I love the simplicity of a manual gearbox. Very little to go wrong in there.

the only thing i would like to add to this already long post is, if i had my choice again i would go for the six speed over the fiver. the reason being that the five speed has a taller reverse and backing can be hard at times do to the fact you cant just let it out and back, you have to use the clutch which im sure is hard on it.
