Guys and Gals,

We are working on it. Things are moving a little slow because Marco has other obligations too. Combine this with the fact that the 2001. 5 ETC's threw us a curve ball. I should be getting a beta unit very soon for the 2001. 5 ETC's. Marco also had a bad intake air temperatur sensor that was causing us problems. I think he is going to post on this. He saw a significant fuel mileage increase once he replaced this sensor. His bad sensor was causing us cold start problems too. Once we have a good beta unit for the 01. 5 units, we will hit the dyno, and get some hard numbers. Then we should be good to go. (Cross your fingers)That's why I say at least another month.

I didn't realize that the 2001. 5 ETC's were different than the 2001's. What are the differences? Inquiring minds want to know #ad

Thanks,

Hi Gang,
Simple Minds sez " Alive and Kicking", same here... #ad

Main question is , why does it take so long?

You're absolutly right! Point is, I'm in Italy, the test crew is in the States.
This slows us down... much.

As Doug said, after a long time that my friends had a problem when starting their trucks cold, I've found that I had a bad Intake Air Temperature Sensor. That made me calibrate the ECM's in a wrong way.

ADT will have soon a Tech Page where you'll find more information about that sensor thing. I'm lead to believe that several people with low mileage problems have a bad IAT sensor! More soon to come about it.

Back to the ECM's!
At this point, I think I'm done with the ETC ECM's. The ECM's will have four different files in them.

File one, the original file, only the boost limiter is removed for the folks with bigger injectors. No more need for a boost module.

File two, is a fuel saver file. For all the times one want's simply to cruise arround.
(And why not, save fuel)

File three, is a " moderate" performance file that works decently with the CC.

File four, is full power... .

Obviously, files 2-3 and 4 have better timing, several changes made in order to build up boost faster, speed limiter removed, boost limiter removed, better throttle response and and and...

One idea is burned into my mind, power isn't the main concern, DRIVEABILTY IS! Power is useless if you can't use it! With mine ECM's the truck becomes " A dream to drive" (Words of an test dummie) #ad

The 2001. 5 ECM's are very different from the 2001's. First off, from a certain point on Cummins does no longer use the Crankshaft Position Sensor but only the Camshaft sensor.
Then, the VP is a larger displacement unit in the newer trucks. That means that it's fuel curves in the ECM are completly different, along with several other changes in the ECM's file.
B. T. W. The 2001. 5 ETC ECM's, are much more similar to the ETH ECM's, than to the 2001 ETC's.

I strongly believe that I'm also done( or at least nearly) with those ECM's. Doug will get the first Beta unit soon, then we'll know!
Stay tuned, you'll hear more news soon.
Marco

Bad intake air temperature sensor. How would I test it?

Find a buddy with the same engine/transmission. If you both have Palm Pilots you need that $99 software to see what your voltages are. Both trucks side by side should be almost identical!

It seems you are making an attempt to sell this module to the HP freaks and the MPG freaks! Your mods sound like a dream come true. Keep up the GOOD work!

Marco,

How about a specific program for heavy towing? As much midrange added HP and torque as you can get while keeping EGT's within reason.

NOPE!
Not two sensors in two trucks!
You need to know what's the resistance of that sensor at a given temperature. You simply can't be sure that both engines are at the same temperature!

Two sensors on a test bench. Heating/ Cooling them side by side, measuring their resistance at the same time. That's the only way to find out for sure. Also the time needed to change the resistance when the temperature varies is VERY important.
The service manual provides a chart of the resistance values for several temperatures.

Hope this helps.
Marco.

More informations about the IAT sensor are availabel now at:http://www.smokindiesel.com/Technical.htm

Will dealers be able to detect this new ECM when hooking the truck up to the computer? and second will the dealer be able to reflash/overwrite the program files on the new ECM???

I too am looking very forward to hearing good news about the release of the MAD ECM's, as I am sure are a lot of other Members!! Please keep us informed about the progress. Again, thanks for all the HARD WORK!!!!:D
