I'm 6'4"/255#, my wife is 5'11"/135# we have a Cal King mattress. Unfortunately, this is the second Cal King that we are going to have warrantied for 'divots'. The first was a Sealy, this one is a Stearns & Foster. We turn the mattress every 90 days or so to even out the wear but the mattresses are only lasting ~3 years before they are too screwed up for my back. I know there are some big guys on this site that must of had this problem and figured out what mattresses work. I know - two twins would be an option... ... .

Select Comfort. ( I think thats what Jeffs' post is refering to. )

I had terrible nights of tossing , turning and aching back until I spent the money on this ( $1000+ I think). Still have an ocassional bad night but I wouldn't trade it for any other mattress out there. Ours is a queen size, just stuck it in the old water bed frame. The neat thing is it is two twin mattresses so we each have our own level of flotation. I think it has a five year warranty and we used it for her side at @ 4 3/4 years , no questions asked, new mattress in three days.

For twenty bucks you can get a coleman air mattress that feels as good but its hard to get the wife to blow it up till it feels just right. :D

I been using a waterbed since 1978, of course not the same one :)

A couple years ago we went with a wavless design, works real well.

In one apartment I lived in for around 6 months I could not use the waterbed, I ended up moving to a place I could use my waterbed as my back hurt so bad from normal beds.

My only recomendation on a water bed is get one with 2 heaters, the wife always wants to turn it up, I always want to turn it down.

I'm 6'5 250 - and my waterbed has served me fine since 1991 - every time I spend more'n a night on a regular bed I have pain for the next week.

Steve, you were right ahead of me.

The wife and I bought a pillow top from Denver Matress about 4 years ago. We hate to sleep anywhere else. They have a good waranty. We bought the king and they have one they call the "Big Kahuna" It was huge, I'm 5'10 around 210 and I think we could have slept 4 of me on this thing. It was easily 18-24" longer than me. The prices are factory direct since they make'm and sell'em.

The told us no jumping on the bedOo.

I'm 6'2" ,270lbs. I bought the deluxe select comfort about 41/2yrs ago, then got married to 5'3" little lady. all seemed fine for awhile, then she complained of uneven mattress. talked to s. c. ,they sent an extra piece of foam for center. seems main mattress cover/bag that encloses everything and holds it all together stretches out and foam takes up the slack. well this went on for awhile and their answer was to stuff foam here and there. you could stand back and see that the bed was all whacked out of shape, so I said, maybe we just need a new envelope to return it to it's original shape. they said that would cost 700. 00 (just for the bag). It is now stuffed up in the garage. I would never have another one. that is the most I have ever payed for a mattress. If it was in a waterbed frame that was the exact size, it might hold it together but with only material and foam forming the frame it just won't stand up for the long haul for big people.

thats my opinion!!!

I'm 6'6", 225#. Have had a Select Comfort for maybe 2yrs (can't remember, maybe longer). No complaints. No more back pain from the bed. Don't hardly roll around anymore. Rarely have an arm fall asleep, used to happen all the time.

I got lucky. Happened to find an ad in the local paper. An older couple had it. His wife made him sell it. It wasn't quite 1 yr. old. Got it for about half of new (less foundation).

I ruptured two disks in lower back 20 years ago, and for several years found great relief from sleeping in a waterbed. Eventually though I noticed that my back hurt like  every morning, but laying in the bathtub (hard surface) gave great relief. I slept on the floor and :D good night sleep for first time in a long time.

Eventually picked up one of those Sealy posturpedic mattresses that is so firm you can bounce a cannonball off it with no dents. Works great for me and I am a big guy.

Wife complained about it being uncomfortable at first but acclimatized to it within a few weeks, slept like a baby. Guess she decided to grit her teeth and learn to live with it, easier to learn to sleep on a firm mattress than to nurse a hubby who was crippled with back pain. I can tell by the snores she is OK with the mattress now :D :D

I have always preferred very firm mattresses and never had a problem with sagging on my extra long twin. Granted, I was under 220# when I got rid of it but I had had it for probably 12 years without any sagging. I'm really looking for a Cal King that will go more than 3-4 years of my use w/o sagging. I'll check out Select Comfort but I'm a little leery of air adjustable beds - no particular reason, just leery.

We just got a Spring Air Cal King pillow top matress. We switched from a water bed that we had had for 20 years. So far it is a great matress.

Brian, I'm looking too. I have a foam mattress in my trailer that gives me great sleep and am thinking of trying a Tempur Pedic style one at home. My biggest concern is how it will last.

I too have been intrigued by the variable rate foam Tempur Pedic mattress.

I was hoping some of you could give some real life feedback on this.

I am looking for a new matress.

We bought one from "matress factory" here in fairfield about 5 years ago.

It is about wore out, and I cannot get good sleep.

Turn over every 1/2 -1 hour, arms numb, legs numb, ect.

I am 6-2 and 260.

wife 5-5 and 180

I want a great matress, money no object.

What will hold up for a decade, with proper turning, ect...

Thank,

E7

i sleep on the floor on top of a firm underpadded carpet with a 3/4" foam antifatigue mat on top of it. it's pretty much rock hard. i've slept there for like 3 or 4 years now. no problems. when i finish the bedroom in the basement for myself, i think i will make my own bed with solid pine 1x3 slats for the matress... firm is good i think

Back in 1977 I bought a California King waterbed and a large pine frame and headboard. At some point I got rid of the waterbed, bought a Simmons Beautyrest mattress and put it in the old waterbed frame. I thought it was a great mattress until I went back to the waterbed.
