Need Help With Info in Getting a Truck Shipped Cross Country

Reese Titan V for Sale

Am hauling heavy camper with my 24v 3500 auto. Has 3. 53 rear

and doesn't quite have the ump to do a good job. Does anyone

make a 3. 7 rear for Dodge? 410's are a bit to much.

3:73 Gears

Yep, Dana makes a 3:73 complete kit with the 3:73 gears, new bearings, seals and ect. but it is sort of expensive. I'm working with Standard Transmission in Ft. Worth,TX to try to get the price down. These gears will work for those of you with 3:54 ratio but not those with 4:11 ratio. The 4:11 uses a larger carrier. I can keep you updated on what I find out. Also, I think Piers said he could save us some money on the 3:73 gear kit, Might want to check with him... ... ... Howard

Unless something changed, the last I heard, the 3. 73 ratio was only available for the Dana 60 and 70. So automatic trucks could get 'em, but those of us with Dana 80's out back were SOL.

As for the carrier incompatibility, swapping it out to one for the 3. x ratio should allow people with 4. 10's to use the newer ratio.

Dana Gears

I have talked to a tech at Dana and the folks at Std. Tran. in Ft Worth. To spend almost $1K and only pick up less than 150 RPM, I think my 3:54s will have to do, at least until I save enough to buy the US Gear underdrive unit. Dana does indeed make 3:73 gears for the 80 but what I need is about 3:90 which Dana DOES NOT make. If any of you want to talk to Standard Transmission & Gear in Ft Worth, the no. is 1-800-783-8726 talk to Charlie Jetton.

With all this talk about gears, it got me thinking. I have 3. 54's too, and they are definitely not my first choice. I don't think its against TDR rules to ask this (someone tell me if it is), but would there be anyone in SW Pennsylvania that has 4. 10's and wants 3. 54's? If so I'd definitely consider trading axles. Drop me an e-mail or PM.

A grand is a lot of cash. I also may have to keep what I have. On the other hand I drove Barry'struck with the 6spd and the 4. 10 and it was awesome.

We have plowed this ground before and this probably won't be the last. SOMEWHERE in our past plowing, there is a thread containing the name and 800 # of a gear service in the northwest that has the ring and pinion sets that will slide into the existing carrier of the 3:54s. They offer a 3:73 and a 3:90 and the cost was quoted to me for $350 for the kit. My memory is excellant but short. The name of the company is a man's name like Dave or Randy or Harry and the rest is like "gear service". If my calculations are correct the manual trans trucks with the 3:54s and 235 or 265 tires has an rpm of 2000 @ 70mph. The 3:73s will add 100 rpms, the 390's will add 200 and the 4:10s will add 300. The autos will be slightly less because of the 8% higher final drive ratio. In 2000, with the advent of the larger tires from the factory, they should have at least given us a choice of a 3:73 or a 3:90. I had a 2000/3500 ETC/DEE with 354's and it would not pull. I kept it 7 months and sold it. I love my 4:10s when towing but they are a pain when I have to bobtail a thousand miles somewhere to pick up an RV. Mi dos pesos... ... .....

How about tire size?? I'm waiting for my

Michilins to wear down where I can con

mamma into new set of tires... Think I can

accomplish getting my 4. 10 up to 3. 9-3. 7

range with two size up-grade 215's to 235's

or 245's.

:)

Engine adjustment needed.

bsherwood,

A friend has a '99 CTD 5speed and tows a 36' Carriage 5th/wl with three slides. I helped with his modifications that allow him to maintain interstate speeds and safe egts, even in steep terrain. He has 3. 54 gears, South Bend Clutch and stock size tires. Your electronically controlled Cummins makes for easy torque and hp adjustment, but understand that there are significant differences in (VA, EZ, TST, Blue Chip, Bully Dog etc. ) timing/fueling boxes on the market. Injectors are not so hard to judge. Below is a post that I made in the "Rear End" thread on TDR yesterday, Hope this helps:

I've owned one CTD with 4. 10 gears and auto. It towed and drove okay at 55mph and was tolerable at

65mph in overdrive. Don't intend to own another because it's very simple to adjust the Cummins torque to a lower rpm and increase both the torque and hp. Me thinks... why have an overdrive and then gear so low that direct drive is not useable? 3. 54 gears with a manual trans in direct drive (4th with a 5sp. )and 33" tires will tach about 2350 at 65mph. 30" 245/75-16 tires tach about 2600 in direct at the same speed, but still are useful where road conditions dictate slower towing. I rarely shift out of overdrive when towing on good road unless traffic gets in the way. At around 325hp with proper torque curve the mountains will submit!! Auto trans do have a greater ratio overdrive and the lock up clutch in the torque covertor is highly stressed with tall gears and heavy loads but if I could choose my gears with a manual I'd go with 3. 23's, JMHO

3.07's

I understand what roger means. Why not be like the gassers... Use overdrive for cruising and then drop down to direct for towing. Look at Adam (My6EatsV8s) 3. 54's and huge tires.

This would work good for me, anyway, because when i tow, I TOW, but usually I just comute and 4. 10's are too much. Look at a semi, atleast all three of our farm trucks fully govern out at 21-2200. Our big 4wd puts out the best fuel economy at like 1700 pulling a big 9 shank ripper 14-18" deep. There has to be ways to make our 5. 9's put out good powerdown low like other applications with low egt's, but I wouldn't know how to do that since i have 4. 10's and lp injection. I have thought about this before but i thought it was just me THINKING.

my two cents

Brian
