Trip

Hello everyone,

Matt, It was great to hear from you. We are in Calgary at this time. Arrived yesterday and spent today doing antique shops. I am so glad you missed the bad part of the storm. We only ran into hard rain for a few minutes and drove out from under it on our way North.

My stainless system from DPP is great. I couldn't't be more happy with it. Sound is just right and I have seen a drop in my EGT of 100-125 degrees depending on the load. On level ground through North Dakota with no headwind, (if you can believe that) I had a drop of almost 150 degrees. I have NO drone at all.

So far we have logged over 3,000 miles with side trips and unexpected scenic tours, ha, and will be putting more on soon.

I will try to update this thread as I can get to e-mail. I am presently at a college library in Calgary. We are keeping a daily journal and close track of expenses and mileage/miles each day. Should be interesting to see the results at the end of the trip.

About all for now so I will close.

Best regards to all,

John (now retired)

Hey John!

I tried giving you a call on the cell phone yesterday - but you must have been out in the sticks.

Yeah, we just barely missed the nasty stuff... talk about close calls.

Keep in touch throughout the trip - it's fun to hear about your progress.

Give my best to Vicky and the Daschund. :)

Mass to Alaska 2004

Hello everyone,

We are in Dawson Creek, BC at this time. So far we have gone thru 4 time zones and will be doing more. It is unbelievable the number of CTDs we have seen on this trip, especially in the upper reaches. More than any other brand though brand F has quite a few also. Today we will wash the truck and camper, resupply, double check everything I can think of and tomorrow we will go to Milepost 0 and set the trip meter and go.

So far the 96 12V has run like a top. Brand C may say it is the heartbeat of America but the CTD is the heartbeat of North America, and everywhere else as far as we are concerned.

Yesterday we say a black bear beside the road as well as a deer. Today we say a black bear cross very close in front of us and also saw a large bear we think was a grizzly. Color and size were about right. That was a trip by itself. Lots of smaller wildlife and the mountains in Alberta and BC have been beautiful. Went through the glacier icefields in Banff and Jasper National Parks. Awesome. People are great here and this trip is off to a great start.

All for now.

Regards to all,

John and Vickie

Hey John!

Sounds like you're having a really great trip. I'm looking forward to seeing some pictures... that'll hold me off until I get to see that area in person someday.

(Sorry about misspelling your wife's name... )

Update

Well I did not get lost. I just haven't been near a computer at a time when I could get on line or a library was open. .

We have been up North in the Fairbanks and Chena area. Went to the Chena Hotsprings and fished the Chena River. Great Grayling fishing. Largest was 17. 5 inches. The locals tell me this is a really good size for this area. Most were in the 12-14 inch range though one was about 5 inches.

There are a lot of fires in Alaska this year. The third worst season on record for fires. It appears almost all are from lightning strikes.

Went to Denali National Park and wat a time. Bears, moose, caribou, more bears , moose, etc. Really too much to tell all in a short message.

Met our friend who is a park ranger there and she gave us the tour of the local area. Great time.

Made our way down to Anchorage and had some bad news. When in Fairbanks I saw the front tires cupping on the inside. Got to Anchorage and went to get a front en alignment. Guess what? Four ball joints and four days later, (a weekend was in there) we are back on the road. We had unloaded the camper for the alignment and now we have to reload and head out tomorrow.

Headed South to the lower reaches and the Russian River for some fishing as well as the Kenai and whatever else we can find. We will do lots of sightseeing also. Still lots of time left here.

Food is great and so are the people with one major exception but I will not go into that.

About all for now. Will update again when I can.

Matt, Great to hear from you in the last insert. I am glad you are okay after the bad storm. Vickie and I greatly enjoyed

spending time with you guys. Please be sure to look us up when you go back to the East coast.

Regards to all,

John and Vickie

I gotta take a trip like that, John. You've convinced me.

I have friends that have been to Denali and their comments were the same as yours...

I sure hope the only jerk you guys ran into was not the guy doing the ball joints on the truck...

Keep us updated on the trip when you get a chance.

I'll be sure to let you know when I'm back in New England - we had a great visit with you guys.

Take care,

Matt

Thanks for sharing this adventure with us, John. Matt, makes ya want to be there now, don't it? I got a townhouse I could sell to buy a C-185 with a float kit... . But where would I put the Dodge?

I'd be happy to take care of your truck for you... if not - I'm sure your Dad wouldn't mind cruising around in it.

I will go to Alaska someday...

Hello again,

In anchorage again after a trip south to Homer and Seward and the surrounding areas. This is also a very beautiful part of the state of Alaska. The mountains in Seward come right down to the edge of the water and in the morning the mist hangs in the mountains for quite awhile. Beautiful. Homer has a wonderful area on the spit for all of their charters and other water activities and as you come out of the hills you can oversee the spit and bay. Just breathtaking.

Tried fishing for Dolly Varden trout but no luck. We have to have the fridge looked at tomorrow for a minor problem then will be heading to Valdez.

Before we leave and this would be on the way out, we would like to go to Chicken, (yes Chicken) and over the Top of the World Highway. This may not happen though as there are huge wildfires all through this area. The road is open but there is heavy haze so visibility is limited. If the fires are still a problem we will by-pass this area even if the roads are open. We just do not want to add to the unneeded traffic in the area. The fire crews have enough to do without adding another sightseer to the roads.

No, the guy who was a jerk was not the mechanic. Anchorage Dodge treated us really well with the repair and fit us in to an already very tight maint. schedule. The truck was in over the weekend which was a bummer but it couldn't be helped. We got a rental car on the second day so we were not totally stranded.

Today is shopping, errands and laundry day so it is not real exciting.

All for now.

Best regards to all,

John and Vickie

"Dolly Varden trout" ?

I have never heard of such a beast...

You know - I really need to make a trip to AK. Especially after hearing all of these positive reports.

I'm glad you and Vickie are still enjoying the trip.

Keep in touch,

Matt

Matt,

You definitely need to get up there. I got a sub to Alaska magazine, you should too. I got mine off ebay. Well worth the price just for the pictures alone.

Hey guys, going to get the MBRP which stainless system should i get, The 304 and 409 or the strait 409 system. I am going to get the single outlet, dual would be cool but a bit pricey for now, could not do other mods that i want to.

"The 304 and 409 or the strait 409 system. "

I'm not real sure what you're talking about... I'm aware of 3 systems:

304 stainless single exhaust - turbo to tailpipe

304 stainless dual exhaust - turbo to tailpipes

409 stainless single exhaust - turbo to tailpipe

Perhaps someone from DPPI could shed some light on the situation...

Matt

Sorry for confusion, The 304 system had the 409 stainless muffler i believe with 304 ss pipes and the 40 ss is pipes and muffler. What is the difference between Stainless Steel

The 409 is a higher grade of stainless steel. It will (in theory) be more resistant to corrosion...

Road salt doesn't have any mercy for anything... stainless or not. Stainless at least has a bit of a fighting chance against corrosion... and it will probably never rust through like an aluminized system...
