The word is, you Dual Disc guys have no damper springs.
This is supposed to lead to input shaft breakage.

Well?
How about it?
How many miles are on your clutch, your torque range, and # of input shafts you have broken.

Any other quirks you have noticed since you put it in.

Hi Gene. .
I'm one of the dual disk guys. . [or was. the wrecked truck has it waiting for me to pull it out and send it back for larger centers to use in my new '01]. . Very happy with it!. .
They are not for everyone as they have issues as any high horsepower clutch has... just little things you have to get used to. . not many miles on the Cummins application but many on other HP uses [mostly small block Chevy HP motors]
Ol' # 1 was around 700/750 ft lbs. . no problems. .
again there are little things to get used to. . you don't try to slip the clutch at starting. . you get a harmonic vib. in 4th geer [5spd] makes you thing your transmission is going out, caused by solid center disks. . 1st & reverse are claimed by some to be hard to get into. . another "trait" of HP clutches. . just go in 4th or 5th before reverse and non issue same with 1st do 3rd or 2nd first then 1st. .
hope the questions are answered
Gary

10000 miles, no breakage, 550 or so hp. Over 1000 ft lbs torque. No rattle, no vibrations.

I've had 3 dual discs now, the first found a flaw in my input shaft, the was the "pulling" discs, it chattered a bit. I told Jim Leanard of this and the next round we went to the "street" version. Great clutch for the 400hp type daily driver, not truck pulling clutch thow. It only took 3 to smoke it. Now I have the metalic discs in, They suck, Harsh chatter, barley any realese( you have to shut the motor off to change directions and you had better stop in the gear you are to take off in) But it works great for truck pulling and mud bogs. It also slips real bad when its cold. But no more inputs have given up yet. 590+hp 1200+ torque. #ad

Well now. A little East vs. West here!

Chris, the way I see it, you don't have enough power to break anything. 500 hp is yesterdays news. The westcoasters have broken 600, you may want to catch up.

That was supposed to be funny, no flaming!

This is good feed back.
Do you guys know of friends results with the same clutch?

Thanks, Gene

Ya there is a little red ram running around here with 600+ HP 1200+ torque. . many miles now don't know exact. . Has the same type of issues as my ol#1. . [I have driven it #ad

no trans breakage and you know that HVAC has given one or two tests to it... hehe

Hey, with all I've done to it since it was last on a dyno, for all I know it could be at or over the 600 hp mark. Work takes priority to traversing the state to the guy who has the dyno. I have come to the point where I break the tires loose on the street in just about any gear I'm in. I love horsepower, and I cannot forsee swapping out to an identical whacked out pump as the Auto Wurks Diesel racer has. So I'll drive to and from work in it and still beat up on all the camaros, corvettes and mustangs. Beyond the fun and games, though, I did order an exchange transmission from Standard Trans. today because I do pull the race trailer and I love using 5th gear for those long straightaways on the Western NJ I-80. That to me is worth a whole lot more than more hp for my street sleeper. #ad

Just got back on Sunday with my new McLeod dual disk street version installed by Jim Leonard and here's my findings.

1) Slight chatter when starting out in 2nd gear. If you let the clutch out just right you can all but eliminate the chatter. Jim tells me that the chatter will subside after break-in.

2) Pullen the 15k 5er: there's a wee bit of chatter starting out in 1st. More like a "chatt, chatt" instead of chatter because it only does it once or twice. No chatter in reverse.

3) 5th gear rattle (6 speed) on hard acceleration is hardly noticeable. Jim took me for a ride in a 5 speed that he just installed the McLeod in and the 4th gear rattle is much more pronounced.

4) Neutral grind or rattle: #ad
When sitting at idle in neutral there's a rather load grinding noise coming from the transmission. This I'm told is due to the "solid hub" of the clutch. When you push the clutch in the noise goes away and there's no noise when the truck is cold.

All in all I think I’ll keep it for now but I really hate #ad
the neutral grind. Maybe some thicker oil will help. I know the oil in the 6 speeds is a special blend and is like 30wt.

I must say that I hardly had a chance tonight because of these silly discs that are in my truck for now. I may be going to an auto shifter. #ad

Well I was trying to get into the turning lane to go right, well it was corvette and the guy didn't let me and the dambed clutch slipped. So

I have the street discs in mine and they will slip when i'm pulling the sled. Of course I do run it up to 3900rpm before I let it out as gently as I can. In third gear low range it slips about 150' or so. On the street Sometimes I have trouble going into reverse and I get that 4th gear vibration but it seems to hold pretty good. Slightly more than 215 HP and 440 lbs ft of torque #ad

na they just suck, they slip for a wile until they get hot, then they are stuck. The problem is I don't get to pick on randome rods anymore. It takes way more planning now.

MGM, since when are you planning to sink the money into your rig to properly power it? You barely slipped a Centerforce with your power. #ad

I haven't had any problems with my McLeod clutch, I have put it through some tough spots too! Not quite as harsh as Adam, but pretty harsh. Gene, if you want a bullet proof pulling clutch, you know where to go. But why expect the pulling clutch to be streetable? You are one of those "I want 500+hp, but no smoke, and not too high of EGT's". Keep searching, good luck!

Now Eric,
You know that last bit is out of line! There is a difference between "streetable" and "Going to explode your input shaft because there are no damper springs"
In the Cummins owners situation, we have to have race equipment that is streetable because of what we do and the way we drive.

I am just trying to prevent getting burned a second time on a clutch.
At this point, the search is over,I just have to decide what sacrifice will be worse for me.
Could someone build a new bell housing so Mitchell can fit damper springs in 'nere!

And of course you don't have any problems with a clutch, you don't do nothin!!!!!!!!!
Gene

You mean driving to the grocery isn't rough on my Ram? I better modify my first post then... #ad

Gene, I hate it when Eric makes me hold the eggs on the way home from the grocery. The beer in the back is all slanted like the Leaning Tower of Pisa by the time we get to his house...
