Wondering what I would need to change to make my SRW Mega to a Dually. Is the rear axle the same width/size? My SRW is already a 3500 for reference. I am hoping it's as simple ask finding the flares and buying the wheels. Any gotchas I'm not considering? I am doing this mainly because I am looking for additional stability for a slide-in camper.

thanks for the help.

I'm glad you asked this question. I was considering doing the same mod to my SRW SB Quad Cab. Sure would be nice to only have to buy the mega cab fenders, wheels, and tires, but I think that there is more to it than that. Seem to remember a difference in axle width or something.

I may take a drive to my local dealer and take a measurment. I know I've heard the same thing for the QC duallies but I have a feeling these megas are differenct. I'll post what I find. thx.

Here is the info I got from the dealer regarding the flares:

The rear fenders for the dual rear wheels are 5KM24TZZAA for the right side and 5KM25TZZAA for the left side.

They cost $572. 00 each and would have to be ordered. these fenders do not come in color so they would need to be painted. and are not an accessory so you would have to figure out where to drill your box side and if the wheel opening would have to be enlarged. There is also nothing saying there isn't any slight changes in the box side to make it flow into the outer fender better. I hope this information is of some help.

Obviously you will need different wheels.

You will also need the dually adapters for the front and spacers for the rear. The DRW rear axles are about 2" wider I think.

I looked into it myself. After thinking about it, I decided to get a truck with an 8ft bed so I could carry more equipment when I travel for work.

If the 3rd gen trucks are anything like the first gen's the DRW beds LOOK FUGLY with out that extra fender lip do your homework before you just go buy a bed you may need more then that . also look at frame width there is a slight difference on atleast first gen stuff . If nothing else go with a wider tire for stability with the camper .

Curious what the fenders look like in the factory, non-painted finish. Might match my front flares perfectly.

The spacers are fairly cheap on e-bay, and the wheels are reasonable. Too bad those mega-fenders are MEGA-EXPENSIVE:eek:

To go DRW to SRW you will need a new bed - they cut the fender sheet metal above the 2nd liner mounting hole to hog out the wheel well.

Don't know about the axles on the 3rd gen. But other than the cab on the megacab, everything else is about the same.

One other difference between SRW and DRW trucks (at least on the 06's) is the brake caliper/piston size on the rear axles. The SRW trucks have 2 45mm brake pistons in the calipers. The duallies have 2 51 mm pistons. That equates to a 28. 4% increase in braking effort on the rears with a factory dually configuration when compared to a SRW.

I got on the Carson Dodge site and asked John Holmes whether or not the larger calipers/pistons could be retrofitted or not. Never did really get a straight answer as to whether or not it was possible, only that they wouldn't do it at their store due to potential liability issues. Inasmuch as both would be "factory" systems, and that rear braking effort isn't apparently controlled by a proportioning valve to take into account laden/unladen conditions on either setup, I took that to mean there may be other potential differences such as perhaps the programming in the ABS computer. Rear wheel lockup wouldn't be something one wanted in a panic braking situation. If anyone on this site knows anything about these issues, I'd be glad to hear about it as I'd prefer the larger brakes if everything else is equal.

I was thinking of converting my truck to a dually but I decided afterwards to wait and do the all out longbed conversion later on. I do have a pair of brand new in the box Mega Cab dually fenders that I need to get rid of. Our wrecking yard has interchange so I was able to find out all of the interchanges and info. The only difference in SRW and DRW beds is the fenders on them and the wheelwell lips have about a 1/2 inch cut out of the top of them, I compared two beds in the yard. The only other things you will need are: A complete rearend (w-calipers since they are different), front hub adapters, cab lights, and a dually tailgate light. If you are interested in the fenders give me an email at -- email address removed --, I should be able to give you a pretty good deal on them. Thanks, Justin
