Our new 2001 2500 4 x 4 SB came with 10 ply Michelins.

Last night, I had a catastrophic failure of the left rear, unloaded. The tire suddenly lost air pressure and then proceeded to really come undone. The tread did not separate from the carcass, but the OWL sidewall failed
completely, with total separation from the rest of the tire.

Have any of the rest of you had this problem? This was the worst single incident of tire failure I have ever had.

Thanks for your help.

Harry

After some listening-in, it is apparent to me that the Michilins that come from the factory are NOT of the same quality we buy from a tire dealer! Not sure how or why, but I have read threads about guys only getting 10k miles or less out of thier OE tires... the Michilins I bought from a local discount store looked like new after 45k miles when I sold the truck. Something is rotten in Denmark.

Very scary! The only Michelin failure I've had was from runing over cactus while going around a bad section in the trail off road in Baja. The tire was a XOne (street tire) and very slowly lost air due to many (at least 10) tiny puncture holes from the cactus spines. The dealier did replace the tire (pro rated) though. Glad your OK... I also had one of those cactus spines go through the sole of my thongs and into my foot 1/2" #ad
after stopping to check our progress running along a bluff in Baja trying to find a route to the beach.

Sorry to hear that - My OEM "M's" have over 18,000 miles and I expect between 35-45 at this going rate.

Bought my first Dodge Diesel in 89. Came with Michelins. Got 70,000 miles out of them. Replaced them with same tire and drove from Jacksonville, Fl to Huston, Tx. Came back to the campground one night after closing time and gate was locked. I saw that the out gate was open. Backed up enought to get around gate house and went in through the out gate. Guess what? They had a set of spikes gaurding the out gate. I didn't back up for enough to see the warning sign. Three out of four got spiked. Next morning took them off and had them patched from inside. The folloeing year whent to Alaska with same tires. Still running when traided for 97. Just replaced the Goodyear with Michelin. Goodyear tires had about 55,000 miles on them

My OEM's are pushing 18K, even flat wear just nicley. However the rears show signs of burning. Me bad.

Will need new skins only becuase I've been smoking them. Would like to go to a 8" wide wheel. Like the wheels on the 00 and 01's.

Found a set in the classifieds, but too far away.

I expected to get more miles than this out of michelins.

Hay wiley coyote I wonder if you lost your valvestem. I had the valve stem fail with 16000 miles on the truck. I was very lucky that I had just returned to camp and parked in front of my fifth wheel when it let go. I had noticed before that the valve seemed to move around more than it should. Checked the other stems and one other seemed too flexible I had that changedthe tire shop felt it was not seated properly. You might want to check the stems on your other tires.

The original tires on any new vehicle outside of true performance vehicles, are not the best that manufacturer makes. I am surprised at the catastrophic failure that Willeycoyote had, though. I knew someone who had a big bad tire failure on his Buick. They ended up getting a copy of the invoice which Buick recieved from the tire manufacturer, as part of the settlement. This was in the two ply days, long ago, so put this into context. The invoice for the original tires was for $11. 00 each tire! My SWAG ( scientific wild ass guess) is that today's Michelins, and other OE tires, cost about $40. 00 apiece. Any body got any facts concerning this interesting subject?
Ron

Now that you mention valve stems... Changed a flat on my 99 last weekend at 11k on the original tires. Valve stem just decided to up an fail! Glad it chose to do it at home.

I am convinced that the OEM tires on any vehicle are of not the same quallity as after market. My wifes mercedes got 31K on the original set of michelins the second set now has about 42K and still going strong. The michelins that came on my 92 cummings got about 27K before I changed them. theUnroyals I replaced them with got 40K. I can go way back to new vehicles in the 60s same thing

Well try this one on. My wife's 87 Subaru had Bridgestone's, and we got 75,000 out of them. I put the same tire back one, and sold it with 124,000. The tires still had more than half of the tread.
My OE "M"'s have 18,000 on and off road miles, and they look barely worn. And this is in the HOT dry desert of Arizona.
If I want to run over cactus all day, though, I leave that to my Boggers on my Samurai. They are indestructable. I believe certain brands and models have tires just for OE use.
Remember the BFGoodrich TrailMaker. These were OE on Chevy's for a long time.
My wife's current vehicle, a 96 Windstar has Michelins, and 45,000 miles. They still have a lot of tread, too.

Patriot - if you expected to get more than 57,000 miles out of a set of tires on a truck as heavy as any of ours you are asking for A LOT!! I figure 40,000 miles out of a truck tire and they don't owe me anything.

I have 38,000 miles on my OEM Michelins and honestly they look next to new. I do check the pressure regularly and rotate them about every 7,500 miles. When I first got the truck I called Michelin and went over the pressure that I should be running. My truck weighs 4,500 lbs on the front axle and 2,500 on the rear. The tech and I came up with a chart to use at various weights but empty he told me to run 55 psi in the front and 42 psi in the rear. That is what I have been running when empty since new. These pressures seem to give excellent wear.

The origional michelons on my truck were shot after 10,000 miles. Fortunately I have
a great dealership in my town. They replaced them for free with the tire of my choice #ad

Wileycoyote; Darrel has a point about the valve stem. Do you have the steel chrome whls?
I had one leaking down. Turned out that the valve stem had a little cut in it. My local tire dealer said he sees this quite often on these factory steel whls. I beleive he said that since the edge of the valve stem hole is so sharp that they can cause a cut to be inflicted into the stem.

I had steel valve stems installed w/the new tires, then put extensions on the duals, makes the duallys a lot easier to check and air up. Should cure any v/s problems also.

The last time I had tires replaced, the dealer said that any thing that had 45lbs or more had to have steel valve stem installed. I'm not sure if this was a state law or code for Mn. It does make sense, a couple of bucks for a lot of safety.
