Maybe it's the weekly trip to my cabin. 40 miles or so (one way) are a paved secondary that is VERY curvey. First a canyon then a mountain pass. I've tried several different combinations of tire pressure, don't tow much, rotate often, no burnouts. Come to think of it I've always gone through tires kind of fast. hmmmmm

I have 18000 on mine and they are over half gone. I thought it was poor mileage also. I have run Kelly tires for 60000 before thinking of replacing. I will never buy more Michlem's either.

I just replaced my stock Michelin LTX with new ones after 50,500 miles of driving with about 15,000 miles pulling my Jeep. And I thought that was too short of time with tire. I also live in 3 miles of gravel road so I think that may be part of my wear problem. Beside I thought snows going to be falling in a couple of week so I figured my truck could use another set of Michelin LTX shoes.

Tom C, I think if you would keep your right foot off the firewall you rear tires would not be 1/2 shot after a lowly 10,000 miles:D :D :D .

My Michelins are 235/85/16 XPS Traction tires (quite an aggressive tread design) and I have 87000 K on them and I can easily get another 10000-15000 K. I only run Michelins on my vehicles. :)

i have a 99 3500 i bought new. it now has 40335 miles on it... it is running unloaded over 95% of the time on the hiway. the data sticker on the truck calls for LT21585R16 load range D at 65# front and 60# rear... the truck actually came with the same size tires but in load range E... they are rated for heavier load at 80#... . problem!!!!!!!!! tires worn down to less than 2/32 tread left... they are Michelin LTX A/S... why why why?????? i have run Michelin tires for well over 30 years on every type of truck and car i have owned... i am used to getting mileage in the 70's and 80's... what the heck happened... they are rotated every 7500 miles... air checked weekly... love the truck... great... uses no oil but uses fuel like i am J. Paul Getty... ... . but darn, i hate the thought of buying a set of 7 tires every 2 years... . any experience with the steel Michelins??? the real stiff heavy duty one that is recommended for all the gas class A motorhomes??? i surely would like to get at least 65000 from a 7 tire set..... please suggest... ... ... thanks

I have the original Michelins (265s) and at 29K+ it looks like they are about 50%. The way my truck is set up its 8100 with me, wife and 16 pounds of Dogs. We live well over 100 miles from the nearest freeway--Oregon coast-- so most miles are on cury two lane. About 10K of the miles are towing a 12K fiver.

Mine wore out at 30k. Bummer. Folks have had such a wide range of success (or failure) with their tires, that I assume that maybe there is a difference in quality between manufacuring locations. I'm gonna be watching my new Les Schwabs real carefully.

The only thing I can suggest is ensure the front end is *properly* aligned and ensure you have the proper pressure in the tires.

Personally, I would think that load range 'D' tires are a bit light for these engines; the Cummins is 500 lbs. heavier than the gas engines. Use at least 'E' tires, 'F' if you can get 'em. My Yoko 19'5s are 'F' range, and they seem to be wearing like iron now, but still gripping like Gatorbacks.

tire wear sucks

im on my third dodge, and the first two were duallys, and i never made it past 18000 miles on a set, with propere alignment and setup constantly maintained. i currently drive a y2k quad cab sb 4x4 and am just now having to get a new set of replacement for the stock 265 michelins with 33000 miles on them. the fact that i plow 3 months of the year, and tow a trailer the other 9 might be a contributory factor... ...

. . For my part I have 3 Dodge trucks with Coopers on each one. On my 1 ton dually I've been runnin the off brand Kelly's. Been able to get 80,000 on each set with rotation at 6,000 miles. I change to Coopers because I liked them so well on my 1/2 ton. The Michelins to me are over priced . $900 as compared to $ 548 for 4. With road hazared on both. The Coopers are doing me well so I'll stay there till some happenes to make me change.

I've got a llittle over 40k on my Michelins and they have about 50% of the tread left. Can't seem to wear them out and I pull a 31' 5er grossing a little over 20k. I rotate them every 5000 miles and am sure this makes some difference on how they wear. The Goodyears on my 98 Dodge are pretty well worn out at 27k and they are just for occasional loads, running with no load most of the time. Go figure.

I really feel for you people that can't get any mileage out of your tires. If I got that kind of mileage I couldn't afford to run my truck.

I got about 82,000 miles out of my factory Goodyears, 156,000 miles from some Michelin LTX M/S, 128,000 from the next set of LTX A/S and so far 32,000+ on this set with hardly any wear. I have never had to have the front end alligned and haven't done anything to the front end except for changing balljoints at 380,000 miles.

(just hit 400,000 miles at 3:00 this morning bringing a load back from Raymondville, Tx)

WHO gets the good mileage??

Not sure, but it seems that all the instances of people getting 100K +- out of a set of tires are those running very high number of miles, i. e. hauling cars, trailers etc.

Question; are any of the members who just use their truck for normal home owner type activities, i. e. drive to work (excluding those with long freeway type commutes), vacation--with or without a trailer---etc, getting the 70K + type mileage? That is those of us who run only say 20K per year and less.

I use my truck just for "running around" and travel--towing about 1/3 of the miles and have never seen 50K miles on a set of tires.

Wondering if it is only or nearly only those who run lots of miles who get the great tire mileage?? I have only talked to two of three trailer haulers, and all of them were getting 70K+, and most tend to be in the 40K- area?

What is the overall explaination??

Vaughn

you are on to something there Vaughn, I dont hotrod around corners (only in a straight line) and I have a 65 mile commute each day. I have 41,000 and still counting but I also do very little CITY driving.

congrats MIKE, 400,000miles and I'll bet she's just waking up :D

Had a retired trucker tell me to put on new tires when the weather is cold. He said during his career, he had premature wear with every set he put on in warm weather. I got my truck in Nov of 96, went 80,000 on the original Goodyears. Put on another set in the spring of 99, & they're about done at 60k. Have new set of Steeltex Firestones in the garage, but won't put them on till it gets cold... ... ?

I have factory Michelin LTX M/S with 78,000. Just had tread measured and then rechecked at 8/32. Hard for me to believe, but even the salesman agreed it was senseless to replace yet.

45500 on my Mich LT265 75R16 LTX A/S (Stock Tires), gettin' close to the wear bars. The truck gets squirly on wet roads now

I think I can get 50,000 mi out of them. I commute to work, about 20 miles per day and in the warm season pull a landscaape trailer.

I rotate at 5,000 mi.

hey steve H... where in the world did you find a fifth wheel trailer that weighs 20K????? that is WAY too much weight for your dodge TD... . wow..... how do you pull it over 30 or 40 MPH???? we are looking at new fivers and have yet to find even a 40 ft that weighs in at more than 20K GVWR... dry weight little over 15K... . i pull a 12000 pnd. fiver now with auto transmission and on rare occasions have to drop out of OD but 20K..... wow..... i pull mine only 3 or 4 times a year a distance of about 125 miles... the rest of the time i am empty and on the hiway to work about 12 miles... maintain truck and tires constantly and still not getting anymiles on this original set of michelins... . has anyone tried the XPS michelins steel ribs??? i beleive that is the one every publication recommends for motor homes and heavy tavel trailers... my tire man says he has a few that run them on the front tires for over a 100K... wonder why they dont run them on the rears also..... appreciate all the feedback... . amazing how anyone gets a 100K or more on any brand tire other than a World War 2 truck tire... . wish i could find some that would wear even 60K... thanks for all the advice
