I don't know what else to do. I have been to seven dealers and had no results. They have reflashed the ECM, replaced the lift pump, replaced the head gasket and the map sensor.

My problem still exsist.

I took the truck to Cummins twice at my expense they finally found a 1689 code. They said no comunication between V44 and ECM. They printed every thing out and said it needed a new V44.

Off to the dealer I go with paper work in hand. They cleared the code and test drove the truck and it didn't reset the code so they said it was all fixed.

I tried to explain you only really feal it when pulling my fiver. They said the truck meets spec and thats all they can do. I also called Cummins factory and they said the same as the cummins shop.

Now I have complained to DC several times and they are always suppose to have someone call me back and it never happens.

The service manager was to call me three times and won't return my call.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to who I should contact next.

By the way I have been following all of the related post and there doesn't seam to be an answer.

I will be at the Cummins shop in Dallas tomorrow for the same problem... . I will post to let you know what their findings are on my truck.

With so many people having the same problem, it's amazing that:

1- Nobody can figure out a definative solution

2- DC accepts no responibility for the problem

What really gets to me is that after a customer spends their own money to bring the truck to diesel EXPERTS at Cummins, the slugs at the dealer resist accepting the information from Cummins. The dealer (and DC) should THANK those that go to such extemes to diagnose a problem that they are unable to identify.

I wonder what engine models/years are effected by this problem?

I have also gotten a P1689 code a couple of times for no communication between pump module and ECM. Both times it has been right after starting the engine and occurs within a minute or so of startup. I can hook my scanner up and clear the code, but it will come back on within a few minutes of driving again. Once I feel the midrange miss, the check engine light comes back on and stays on with the P1689 code. I have tried to recreate the miss/lost communication at idle under the hood by disturbing the fuel pump connector and a few feet of the pump harness and haven't been able to recreate it; it only will miss again if I start driving it.

On another attemt to diagnose/eliminate I disconnected my DDEZ module and cleared the code and drove the truck for 5 days and the miss or the check engine light would not reoccur. I then hooked my DDEZ back up and drove for a couple of weeks and everything ran fine. It started again the other night at work when I started the truck up and I cleared the code twice before making it away from the plant. I drove about 10 miles with no check engine light or miss and went to pass someone and I noticed that I had only stock hp availabe. After making the pass, the light or miss still had not happened. After about another mile when I lightly lifted the throttle for a downgrade, I felt it miss and the check engine light came on immediately. I pulled over and cleared the code and shook the harness and pump connector and could not get it to miss or set the code again. So I disconnected the DDEZ again and drove 2 days without incident and hooked the DDEZ back up again. Still no problem 300 miles later.

I thought I would share some of my truck's experiences and what I have done so far just in case some of you other guys have tried some similar diagnostics/eliminations in hopes of beating this amimal.

So far it is still a mystery except for the fact that when I disconnect my DDEZ, the problem does't happen again on stock electronics only. On the other hand when I hook my box back up, it doesn't come back for quite a long time.

Stealerships

One dealer actually wanted me to leave the truck so the mechanic could take it home for the night and see if he could feel the stumble.

Ya right. I want some unqualified uncertified so called mechanic beating on my truck for the night.

This same dealer had a survey for me to fill out about the dealership attached to the back of my paper work. The funny thing is it was allready filled out with perfect marks.

It seems they really have won, because my truck is not fixed and I can't get them to do any thing. I'm Pi$$ed.

Diesel...

We get a few of your type every so often. The service guys take your description of the problem very seriously. They offer to attempt to duplicate your problem by an overnight test. You refuse, thereby denying them the chance to experience the same anomaly. I'll bet they will even offer to try to duplicate the problem by offering to try it with your fiver hooked up. Will you let them? Your truck is insured to the hilt when your dealer drives it for test or evaluation. What's the problem? How in hell can we help you if you don't want help?

Ol Ron

I have offered to bring my trailer in. I can. t even get the mechanic to go for a ride with me with out the trailer. I want to duplicate the conditions. They won't do it. Hey I try to help them with documentation from Cummins and they won't even call them to varify it.

I'm sure there are some upstanding mechanics that work for dealers and if your one of them and I offended you I apologize.

I am relating the frustrating experiances that I have had with the dealers I have been at.

A skip is a skip and a code is a code. I thought that the 1689 code would spell it out for them. It says the pump is not comunicating with the ECM.

What more do they want.

If i could make a suggestion. Here in alabama most dealers don't have a diesel mechanic. We actually do the warranty work on trucks for some of the dealers. I have found it is the small mom and pop dealership that go out of their way to try and make customer happy. Don't know where you are located but would suggest you call local bosch fuel shops and see if any do warranty work for dealer. We have changed several pumps because of this problem. hope this helps

Mc Dowra

Thanks for the suggestion.

So they are aware of a pump problem. I understand it's in trucks from 98. 5 to 01's.

They are doing a good job of ignoring it.

b you're killin me

yo b, enough of that ol p pump stuff, just because you are stuck in the stone ages with that mechanical stuff, we choose to run with a more sophisticated crowd.

Oh what was that you dont have a stumble... Damm got me there

If dc cant fix this thing i might just have to make a trip to vegas, spend the kids college money and have dd build me a hybrid, 700 hp sounds cool... think smokey could handle it. think my engine/transmission friction coupling device could handle it. you know how i drive. Ill keep you posted after dodge sees the truck

My truck never turns on any codes. At least the light has not come on since I replaced my TPS. Does the light have to come on in order to have codes set off?

I thought the same thing. Have DD work on the pump.

I was at Cummins Southern Plains in Dallas this morning to try to diagnose the midrange miss in my truck. They dyno'ed it and said that there was no problem, and that Hp was good for this engine. I felt like a stoopid whiner for complaining about a non-existant problem.

When I got home, I studied the dyno printout and saw that the lowest rpm tested was 2400!!! This is above the 1800-2100 rpm range where I TOLD them the problem was!

The dyno sheet also stated that the customer concern was LOW POWER. NO NO NO! I told them it ran flat or missed from 1800-2100 rpm. It seems a miscommunication between the service writer and the dyno operator wasted an entire morning of my time.

I will call tommorow and confirm what was done on the dyno. The people at this Cummins shop could not be nicer or more helpful... I just wish I had looked at the dyno sheet before leaving!

Hesitation

Kent My truck had two codes set and the light never came on.

I talked to DD about the pump issue. They said they take a fresh pump and turn it into a performance pump. I believe the pump is mostly designed for higher HP trucks. Probably not what your looking for if just towing.

I have been looking for an answer for about a year to this problem. I have about 145K on the truck now and the problem is getting worse. I tried Cummins and they said that they could not troubleshoot the problem with the mods that I have made to the truck. I think they know what is wring and will not come clean.

Diese1nut

Thanks for the reply, I am going to check for codes. I am going to CT not far from Janity do you think he could get to the bottom of this?

Kent

Dieselnut i dont know if this will help because i read your sig and not sure if you have a plug in fueling box . I had same problem for 8 months mostly when towing drove me nuts. I recently removed my Banks ottomind , and replaced it with Edge Pro comp problem is gone good luck with dealer.

Mid range skip/shudder

I have been having this problem for some time now and was wondering if anybody could describe testing and changing out the APPS - I have been told this is the Accelerator Pedal Postion Sensor (same as TPS??) - anyway I keep getting a "lower than minimum voltage APPS" code (SnapOn Engine Analyzer) and would like to know how hard this item is to get to and change out???

Jmccarthy1

I Put one on my truck. It was no problem to change at all. just remove the plastic cover with 2 plastic screws, and then the 2 cables were not hard to get off. (There is a plug on the bottom that was hard to get off so I unpluged it after I unbolted the TPS) Then unbolt the TPS and then put the new one on. The 2 cables and then the plastic cover. there were no adjustments. Hope this helps.
