Hey Wade, check o'er there at them piers people, i heard they had new heads available, they should even be able to help with some of the aforementioned mods. have you priced repairs, they do some pretty good repairs nowadays, check Vaughn Mackenzie's thread on the nwbombers, one of the repair company's reps went into detail about head crack repair. another idea is a cummins reman, while you're checking around. how 'bout barber's or even tdr wanted? never know who'll have one laying 'round. lemme check in the rock and dirt, i recall a few engine reman people in there. rob.

Wade,

You might just call the guys at Head Works of Nashville. I'm not saying I recomend them or that they would even mess with a diesel head, I've only done business with them once on an aluminum Yamaha head, but they had some nice looking gasser heads they had built in their shop. They were busy so they must do some pretty good work. Their number is 227-9300. They're on Gallatin Road in Inglewood.

What are the color choices again for us slow folks?

Yall ain't a gonna believe this stuff but--

I run down to Dixie Diesel to get the injectors checked. Tim is the injector guy. I go in the back with Tim and ALL 6 injectors are ******* and "popping" low. SO Tim sets me up with some that he thinks will do the job. And I had him run one of those on the tester. No drizzle and a 4200-4300 psi clean pop! The pintle were worn in the old ones. He blames it on dry fuel--but that's a whole nuther deal.

And I told him about Mark's run-in with a butt on the phone down there. He was cool about everything and said basically--once you the customer understand that Dixie Diesel isn't responsible for your blown engine--then they'll set a pump or injectors or turbo anyway you want it. They're just nervous about the daily driver, no gauges, no clue sort of person trying to mess them over. It does help if you know the specs (real numbers) when you are discussing it with them.

And they're a "mid-level" Cummins dealer. Which means that they have ALL sorts of parts, gaskets, lines, insulators, Stanadyne, filters, etc--with better prices than CC.

Oh, the part you ain't going to believe. Well I spent another $500 for those parts, hauling tail back and the transmission gets funny.

Damn freaking "clip-in" was blowing juice. Spent 5 hours waiting for tools and rigging up some stuff and ... .

Got it going again. Seems fine. Blew about 1. 5 gallons.

Automatic guys--get those stupid plastic clip lines :-{} off the truck NOW! You'll be happy knowing that crap won't happen to you. I was lucky and caught a pretty day and a helpful store owner and had a wife handy to get my tools and other truck and all that.

Cylinder Head

Reman out of Texas is coming 650 plus 50 shipping. Label for return or $100 core. Cylinder Heads international

New from MN through City Diesel, 700 bare, 850 built. That price reflects a TDR discount through Tim at City Diesel.

You can buy them all day long for 1200 bucks, but I didn't go that route.

Piers gets 1400 to stage one port--in addition to the cylinder head price. And over $100 to ship--just too far.

Head should be here today. Then to machine it... etc.

Wade,

I had the same deal as Mark with Dixie. What they need to do is NOT treat everyone like they're green. When I started being specific with him about what I wanted to do is exactly when he got pissy. If someone is giving me specifics like I was giving him, then I wouldn't take it for granted they don't know what they're doing. I won't be calling them back.

Now, ... . (breathing again)..... did you happen to give Head Works a call? I'm just wondering if they will mess with the Cummins at all.

:( Sorry for your luck on your transmission. I know the auto is faster for racing and maybe even better for pulling, but for what I'm doing I'm still glad I went to the manual. ;)

i thought there was more to the story at dixie diesel i have had good luck with jim.

iirc, Jim Simpkins is the guy who started Head Works years ago. He has since retired, and now lives in my neck of the woods. He's got a full machine shop out behind his house, and now does work out of it as time allows. We can give him a call if you want. Friends use him a lot for gasser heads. They're always happy with his work.

All I needed was a good head. I do the head work myself. I have access to another shop in Columbia with valve/valve seat grinding equipment.

I'm going to use the machine shop in Lebanon to cut for the fire-rings--same place that did Meacham's. Head will be here Monday.

Van Haisley called me back yesterday to discuss my questions on fitting the studs into the holes properly--and head re-torque procedures. He says that it's good to re-torque every six months. And that he has guys running 70 psi on stock gaskets and bolts who do that. 115-120 is the number for OEM fasteners, more than a 1/4 turn is time to pull a bolt and replace it. Suppose I'll be doing that with the other trucks soon.

Now to go re-tap the rest of the block...

My $. 02... . I called and explained my situation. What truck I had, the extension of the mods, and what work I was wanting to get done. I simply told him I have a bent governor spring stud, and I wanted to get my pump re-calibrated with the current plate & DV's no additional fuel wanted or needed.

I don't even remember what he said about repairing the stud, but he basically said that I was a fool to believe my pump could be calibrated with those parts. Hmm... . should have told him to call Schied Diesel, Haisley Machine, or Piers Diesel and tell them the same thing and see how they respond.

He never asked if I had gauges, or realized they weren't responsible for this and that... . basically just acted like he didn't want my business. He got what he wanted cause they will never recieve it and I will tell everyone I know to stay away from them. ;)

Kinda like Line-X of Nashville (located in Goodletsville(sp?) on Myatt(sp?) Drive I think? DO NOT do business with them, they will not honor warrenty work if something happens to your liner. Mine somehow got gouged and ripped from 100lb John Deere suitcase weights when I was hauling them to and from pulls last year. Manager dubbed it "ABUSE" and wouldn't warrenty it. I went over his head to the district manager and he had the same manager call me and he told me he'd tell his DM the same thing and still wouldn't cover but would fix it for $50-75. :rolleyes: There went $410 down the drain. :{

Mark, call me sometime, I need some advise on the electric brakes on my trailer. Also, if you have a floor jack that I might be able to borrow, I want to take the wheels off of it and check them out too. Let me know. Thanks

Update on the progress... from my newtome laptop. Cheryl plopped down a buck fifty for this thing.

Cylinder head is at the machine shop. If you ever buy a reman head with valves installed-take them out and inspect. Some pretty good shavings were left in mine. I'd pay to have it done if I couldn't do it myself. Thinking about removing a little metal from the head when it gets back.

So I still have to clean the oily coolant out of the system. Powder-coating didn't work out for the color parts. My guy couldn't get a small order of red. Blasted and polished is the finish I'm going with now on the Al parts.

I'll check the timing while I'm in there. Dial indicater on the top of #1 might find TDC rather easily.

UPS from Dixie Diesel to here is PDQ. Thanks Tim.

Torque torque and retorque for a while when I gets it together.

Ya'll say a little prayer for the folks in Gallatin that got hit with tornado's today. I come through there right after it hit and it is unreal the damage there.

Mark do you know if Painter's place got hit. It looked like it was pretty rough in that area. Is he ok?
