The Cummins data link connector is on the engine wiring harness, left side lower, either front or rear depending on year. 3 wire triangle on early years and 3 way flat later. Hope this is the info you were looking for.

Cummins bus (connector location in engine bay?)

Thanks Bob! I just checked my Service manual, section 8W-30-28 that covers the Diesel Fuel/ignition system. This shows wiring schematic details between the ECM and the Cummins bus itself, which is what I am assuming you refer to? Please confirm Y/N?

ECM Pin 2 Cummins bus (+) >---------< Cummins bus (+) Pin A

ECM Pin 12 Cummins bus (–) >---------< Cummins bus (–) Pin B

GND CONNECTOR #107 >----------------< Cummins bus (GND) Pin C

.

My truck was one of the last 2nd Gens. with rear brake drums, so I guess it'll come with the three way flat style connector you mention Bob, however it is not entirely clear to me where I can find it in the engine bay? Am I to presume that it has some sort of blanking plug inserted? You mentioned its location as LHS lower - but with respect to/from which direction? Did you mean the LHS of the engine (Driver's side) or the LHS of the engine bay when facing the engine from the front of the truck instead? Please clarify .

Thanks Bob.

FASS II info?

As an aside, I am now taking a super-critical look at the whole LiftPump and VP44 combo and have come across the FASS II, for which I have no personal experience. I guess, because I am now living on "borrowed time", at least as far as the current situation goes, it will probably be in my own interest and protect my sanity! :p to take some initiative here.....

Do any other TDR members have experience of the FASS II unit?
( or similar of course) All feedback/comments/experiences welcomed.

Cheers!

Any chance of a picture Bob?

A picture says 1,000 words and would be much appreciated!

Cheers Bob!

John I have installed several FASS systems with no troubles to date. As far as the tester goes what would you like to do? It will not really help you diagnose anything unless the truck is dead or running really bad all the time. You can not drive the truck with the pump tester hooked up.

Back to "Normal"? and FASS II unit on the way from Piers!!

Hey John any luck? Do you think the tester will be of any use to you?

Blair, I'm going to hold back on the VP44 tester loan for the time being, but many thanks all the same! :) It's been nearly 5 days since I went to Cummins in Wellingborough and got the DTC code erased from the onboard diagnostic memory and (touch wood), my "Christmas tree" at start-up is still normal with no recurrences so far and the truck is running as good as it ever has too!!

I reckon that what with all the poking around in the engine bay, cleaning and reseating of connectors and housings, the glitch that caused the problem in the first place, has been addressed, at least for the time being! I am looking seriously at the FASS unit from Piers though - given the history of marginal lift pumps on our 2nd Gen trucks and knowing that the VP44 failure rate is attributable more than anything else to the premature failure of the lift pump, I'm going to go the FASS route if only for my peace of mind and the VP44 fuel pump's daily diesel diet. :D

Cheers!!!

John,

just one advice. If you need a new VP don't even think about buying one in Europe! I know of a guy in Germany who paid 5K Euro for a new VP from Bosch... Much cheaper in the States!

Marco

P. S. If I can help you, let me know.
Good to know... I just bought an '01, and think the Lift pump is toast... need to put a gauge on it. The PO replaced the VP two years ago... when I asked him about the Lift Punp, he swore that there was no other pump on the truck... he did not know what U-joints were either... truck runs great... just a PITA getting it all in order for the German safety-check and registration...
