Converter Question ?

Brake Controller Install

I know this is going to be all over the place, as

it varies with weight, speed etc - but for all of us who are contemplating a camper, can you guys give us an idea of what we can expect.

During the last month, in a mix of flat land and mountain roads, we averaged 12 mpg. This was with a gross weight close to 13000 pounds and running 65/70 when conditions allowed. When I ran flatlands at 55 mph (just to see what it would change), the box said we were getting 15 to 16 mpg.

running 68-70 MPH up and down hills (bad lands of ND and black hills of SD) and 16,000 lbs combined weight of high profile camper and truck I averaged 10. 8 over 1,200 miles

I record all fuel purchases on our truck on MS Excel. The mileage with the Lance on board runs from 13 to 16 MPG depending on wind and speed.

I was going to post the fuel MPG bar chart that Excel makes up, but I'll have to be "creative" to post it so later for that.

Wind resistance and speed are the biggest factors. I pull a 5th wheel trailer with a tractor on it and get 14-16 MPG at 67 MPH, GCVW 21,000#

With a high profile 5th wheel camper at 62 MPH, 9-12 MPG 14,000#

just my $. 02

I agree with Mschevey

On a 5600 mile trip last June, I averaged 10. 5mpg. This was towing with OD off. I definitely think wind resistance is the biggest factor - along with speed. Sometimes my mileage was better (maybe 12 or so), but the wind conditions and the wind resistance of that big thing were the culprits for lower mileage (down around 8. 5 at times).

Mileage

4x4 pickup with a Lance camper onboard for an 11'4" overall height, running 6th gear at cruise control of 67 mph = 12. 5 to 14 mpg- depending on winds, over a 15,000 mile average. This is doing the math, don't have onboard computer.

Towing a 6x12' Cargo trailer weighing 7500 lbs. , that tucks in behind the camper, only adds about

. 5 mpg more consumed.

I just added to my site a chart of my mileage for my last trip from Seattle to Cabo San Lucas. See it at http://fostertruck.com/cummins/102000update/default.htm Go to the bottom of the page.

Average just under 14mpg at 17,000lbs+ for 5000mi. Without the trailer I get 18. Interesting, the last column is the accumilated average. Notice how it settles down as the total miles get higher.

I've used my camper for about 1/2 the total miles on my truck. It's 11' to the top of the AC and the total vehicle weight runs between 10,100 and 10,800 depending on if I carry the jacks, tailgate, and other junk. I usually cruise at about 62 to 67mph. Average mpg is just over 15, with a high of 16. 5 and a low of 13. 5 (BIG headwind).

I see from other posts that taking my time is worth about 3 or 4 mpg.

I just switched to Delvac 1 synthetic (figured the engine is broken in now at 125,000 miles) and saw my mpg go up by about 2 on a 2500 mile trip (unloaded). Haven't run with the camper on so far, but I'm hoping for a 1 mpg increase!

Milage With Camper

Vacationing out from Alaska in 1998 and 1999 to various locations in the the lower 48 netted milage averages in the low 14s. Camper was an 11' high profile Canadian made unit with basement. Speeds, road conditions permitting, were usually in the 60-68 mph range.

This year I went out with a 29' fifth wheel and averaged in the 13s even though the trailer weight was more than three times that of the truck camper. Speed was again in the 60-65 mph range. I agree with Mschevey, frontal area is the killer for milage along with headwinds and traveling speed.

All trips made with the same 96 dually.

Great stuff folks

Very good data - thanks a lot. Kinda makes you wonder what the big block gas guys get - I dare think maybe 7-8..... and that's on a good day with the Jetstream at your stern.

Just returned from maiden voyage with new 5th wheel to coast. Trip mileage one-way was 240 miles. My truck is fairly new too with only 8000 miles on it... . still breaking in. On the way down my average was 9. 5 mpg... as the last 30 miles of trip was directly into a 25mph headwind... whew!

On the way back I averaged 11. 9mpg at ~65 mph.

Camper has some advantages though. You can go places that no trailer will go. There are no registration fees. And, insurance is extremely cheap. I'll stick with the camper.

I'm with you, David... . since 1970 we've had 4 travel trailers and 3 5th wheel trailers and now only a 11'6" Lance camper(3rd one of those too) and lovin' it!! :D :D :D

Ain't draggin' no more trailers

camper travels

hammerseley I can tell you what the big gas guys get I am still on of those guys 88 ford f 250 460 auto , 11. 5 loaded camper 3 horse trailer the best 6 to 7 miles to the gallon, now with the same load and my 2001 3500 6 speed and around 315 hp I get around 13 16 just depends on where I am, and I am never last at the top of any mountain.

I used to have a camper. 10-foot old thing on my second truck. 69 gmc frankentruck. That was it's name because it had parts from at least four different vehicles: the 69 gmc, a 77 one-ton Chevy van, air filter from a Lincoln, and an engine from an iroc camaro. God I loved that truck, it started out its life in 1968 or so as a 1/2 ton 2wd gmc truck with a 396 big block and turbo 400 trans. I bought it in 96 and two weeks later the Dana 44 rear end spit a spider gear out though the cover. I wanted a 14 bolt for it and found a 77 Chevy one-ton sport van 30 that was being parted out. I bought the whole thing and to make a long story short(er), put the whole suspension, everything, under my gmc. All the a-arms and everything fit perfectly. All the springs fit accept the rears are flat in a van, so I put some three inch blocks in the rear. Gota love all the common parts on gm products. :D

Anyway, later I put an engine from an 87 iroc z camaro in it. The 5. 7l tpi engine, the 3. 73 rear end, the 10 foot camper, and one-ton van springs where working together like a symphony. The frankentruck was beautiful. The 5. 7 tuned port engine made it's peak torque at 3300 rpm, right at 75 mph. No matter what I always got 11 mpg with the camper, good thing too as I only had a 22-gallon fuel tank. Now here is the kicker- it had a top speed of 102 mph!! It was so much fun; on our annual trip to Vegas I passed a lot of cars at over 100 mph. We went that speed all the way from Vegas to Mesquite. The look on some of their faces was priceless! I actually had a passenger in a car we passed take a picture of the rig as it passed them. They where going about 95 and when that lady whipped out a camera, I about ran off the road because I was laughing so hard. To fully understand why they took a picture you need a mental image of the sight. My truck had faded blue metallic paint with that rust stopping black paint in patches all over. It looked like a blue and black cow. Then there was the camper. I think it was made in71- white and gold ugly thing. The truck had a terrible problem with frame flex with that camper on it. I would watch the front of the camper that came out over the cab bounce up and down and I got an idea. I made some brackets and welded extensions onto some rusting old red shock absorbers I had lying around from the conversion. I put those babies on between the camper and the fenders and that thing rode as smooth as a cloud. I had no idea that I could buy things like that. Oh well. The brackets and extensions where bare steel, so they rusted too, but I didn’t care much. Now that you can mentally picture the rig you can understand why someone would want a picture of it while it slowly crept past them at over 100 miles per hour with me, the driver, laughing my a$$ off and swerving around a bit. Oh ya, my friends where in the back playing Nintendo, and when the truck started to sway a little, they looked out to see what was going on. They said that they looked out and saw the people taking pictures and my friends just hit the floor laughing. I will always remember that trip and chuckle. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to tell a story.

 :D :D
